Resolved Question: can a podiatrist help me and my feet?

I was on crutches for about a year, and because I never had any proper rehabilitation exercises and because my health is pretty poor anyway, I have lost the majority of the muscle and padding in my right foot and calf. The result is that everytime I put on shoes the right one is uncomfortable/sore/doesn't feel right, and also that the ligaments and tendons in my knee are being strained and have become very sore. I went to an osteopath (for something else) who realised what was wrong with my foot and suggested a podiatrist. She also explained to me that the change in the shape of my arch/how I hold my foot and why I always am scrunching up my toes is my foots was of compensating for the change due to lack of muscle. I've tried buying numerous different forms of insoles( padded, gel, cushioned, thermal) and standard arch supports but none have helped - I'm guessing because what has happened to my foot is not a standard thing. My question is, if I go to a good podiatrist will they be able to make me custom shaped insoles/supports that can replace the shape of the padding under my foot/heel so that I can wear shoes again? At the moment I can only wear sandals or go barefoot - which is not good in the winter.thanks Bill D - I am in the Uk and I already went to a NHS podiatrist - who didn't understand the problem and my somewhat complex medical history - she thought I just had tight muscles in my right leg so told me to do some stretches - which made the pain even worse - I know know that is because I was overworking muscles that had lost their size and strength. Now I'm thinking of going to a private podiatrist who can be a bit more thorough. If I will be able to wear shoes I don't mind paying - it's something that everyone else takes for granted but that I can't do. more

Resolved Question: injuries for crutches (book)?

Okay, sounds stupid, but I need some detailed and accurate injuries which would then result in the need of crutches. It's not because I'm an attention seeker that purposely wants to hurt themselves, because believe me, I hate that type of people, they just waste people's time and energy. The reason that I'm asking this is because I'm writing a book, not for school or anything, just like a hobby, to entertain myself. In the answers I really don't want people replying saying 'broken leg, duh' because it needs to be a bit more, I don't know, technical, and preferably, something to do with the knee or ankle. Just for convenience, it would be easier for me to write about that. Also, if you could say how you would gain the injury that would be good, and if as well as crutches you would get a cast/support/brace etc. Thank you! more

Resolved Question: Have I damaged my knee or something?

Alright, about... Hmm, I think it was about 4 months ago? Well, I was at Gymnastics, as I do every week, but after warming up, I was struggling to walk. I attempted to get on the beam, but the second I put the smallest amount of pressure on my knee, I just fell straight off. My coach ran to me and asked me to try to stand on the knee, but I couldn't hold myself up and fell straight back down to the floor again. She lifted me up and took me to sit down. Now, the weird part was, all through this, I didn't feel at all in pain! So I headed to the hospital the next day as I still couldn't walk, but they had no clue. However, they did not x-ray me, and sent me off with a bandage and crutches. Over the next few days, it began to feel easier to walk, and I no longer needed the support. However, over the past few weeks, possibly months, I'm not certain, I've been experiencing a lot of pain in the same knee. I haven't bothered going back to the doctors yet, as the doctors in my town will not do anything unless I have a genuine idea of whats wrong. So my simple question is, based on the notes here: Have I damaged my knee? more

Resolved Question: Paraplegic Muscle Advice?

I am an L2 incomplete paraplegic and have been luck enough to have progress over the years since my accident. I currently walk using 2 elbow crutches and wear a pair of small splints to support my ankle, where i have movement. My main questions is - I can stand un-aided and keep my balance but i have to have my knees bent. As soon as i stand up straight my balance goes and i have to grab something before i fall over. My question is, what muscles do i need to work on to be able to stand up straight without loosing balance? And how do i work these muscles. I think i'm right in saying that your toes are a big part of balancing, which obviously i cant use. I'm fairly good at getting about on the floor so there is no real restrictions there for potential exersizes. My partner can also help if i need someone else for a particular exersize. I have a multi gym, rowing machine, exersize bike and treadmil. Thanks very much for any advice coming my way. Cheers Brad more

Resolved Question: How long will a mild knee ligament injury take to heal?

The doctor said i have 'strained knee ligaments' and i have been given crutches and a support bandage. I am icing my knee for 15 minutes every 3 hours to help with the swelling, and i can see it getting better already but the muscle does feel tight and i cannot full stretch my leg out or bend it inwards. I was just wondering how long until i can start walking properly again? and will i be able to play sports in a month or so? more

This is the first time I have ever had any injury in my life, so I was shocked when the doc told me that the tendons in both my knees are very weak. I have never experienced pain like I'm in right now and will do anything to prevent it happening again, so I'm hoping to get some really great knee supports. can anyone recommend me a good one? Obviously i'll be talking to my physio therapist about this too when my knee has healed enough for physio, right now it's crutches for 3 weeks :( more

Resolved Question: McCartney V McCartney?

HomeLatestBest ofCollections It's a very sad world we live in when Sir Paul McCartney and his wife are facing divorce and all anyone seems to want to do is make jokes about her false leg. Personally, I think it's prosthetic. News reports have confirmed that Paul McCartney has separated from his wife Heather Mills-McCartney. Mrs Mills-McCartney is said to be distraught over the split. "He has been my crutch for so long!" She said in an earlier briefing, "I have no idea why this has happened, I'm really stumped" "She's running around in circles", according to a close friend, "she will need all the support she can get. It's not like its easy to walk out on a relationship like this" After his break up with Heather, Paul was asked if he would ever consider going down on one knee again. Paul said he would prefer it if we called her Heather. It is not known whether a pre-nuptial agreement was signed prior to the marriage. Paul McCartney is one of the richest men in the world, and if an agreement has been signed it is believed that she won't have a leg to stand on. Rumours abound over the split which have suggested that infidelity may have been the cause. "She's terrible" a source stated, "always trying to get her leg over". Another source has suggested that her battle with alcoholism was the cause. "Macca couldn't handle it anymore" a friend said, "he would get home at night and find her legless" Many have attributed this to a problem which started with the present that Paul bought her prior to the wedding. Resolved Question: disabled in the UK?

My husband had an operation 6 weeks ago to reconstruct his cruciate ligament in his right knee. He is off work for at least 6 months to recuperate and is receiving SSP. We get tax credits but are not entitled to income support as the total of the the SSP and working tax credit is more than the income support threshold. Can my husband get any disability payments? He cannot easily get around ( he is on crutches and his leg is in a brace with the angle set at 60 degrees), and I have to help him with silly things like getting dressed etc. We have two small children and are really struggling financially. I am trying to find part-time work but it is difficult as we have to take into account the fact that my husband needs help to get around and cannot stand for any length of time as he has been told by his consultant not to bear full weight on his leg. Is there any other financial help available to us? We have been awarded housing and council tax benefit but are still struggling. more
