Resolved Question: Can someone please read my persuasive essay (Are Creativity and Mental Illness Correlated?)?

I apologise if my essay is laden with logical fallacies and the like. This is a piece for a project for AP English Language&Composition. The assignment was to make a zine (a mini magazine type work) and include several different pieces of writing. I just want to know if my essay is acceptable. If there are any suggestions on improvement, please let me know. And please consider the argument of the paper rather than judge based on personal opinion. Thank you for your time. -- “All poets are mad," asserted English writer Robert Burton in The Anatomy of Melancholy (1621). Although Burton’s exaggeration may initially appear dubious, there is a degree of truth derived from that assertion. Numerous influential and innovative writers, artists, musicians, and scientists have reportedly been diagnosed or suspected of being afflicted with psychological disorder. Creativity seems prevalent in individuals afflicted with either a mood disorder (e.g. manic-depressive disorder or major depressive disorder) or in some cases a psychotic disorder such as schizophrenia. Accordingly, there exists a correlation between creativity and mental illness. The most common mental illness amongst creative thinkers appears to be manic-depressive disorder, also known as bi-polar disorder. Bi-polar disorder has similar symptoms as major depression in that those afflicted experience periods of despair and melancholy. Unlike major depression, however, bi-polar disorder additionally includes bouts of “mania” which may manifest as feelings of euphoria or anxiety. Connie M. Strong of Stanford University suggests that “people with bi-polar disorder might also have creative tendencies because they see the world in two ways, with the same surroundings appearing differently to them depending on whether they are feeling manic or depressed.” A bi-polar individual who views the world in contrasting ways may be more likely to be open to new experiences as well as to the imagination and the unconventional. Furthermore, emotion serves as a sufficient means of motivation (Bickhard). Schizophrenia is a psychological disorder categorized by the afflicted individual having the manifestation of disordered and distorted thinking (Weseley). Though there are various kinds of schizophrenia, all forms are similar in that afflicted individuals have experienced a break from reality by experiencing delusions and hallucinations. “Schizophrenic thought processes tend to allow unusual associations which result in over inclusive thinking, with many irrelevant elements being included in reasoning: this peculiar style of thought is assumed to derive from a failure in the filtering of stimuli by dysfunctional gating systems” (Preti and Miotto). Psychologists call the natural human and animal ability to ignore irrelevant information (e.g. extraneous sights, sounds, thoughts) “latent inhibition” (Cromie). It has been observed that individuals with low levels of latent inhibition also have more creative aptitude since “[the individuals are] more likely to be able to combine bits of new information in creative ways” (Carson). Schizophrenics lack latent inhibition more so than an individual not afflicted with psychosis. Consequently, schizophrenics can use the seemingly extraneous information in creative ways. Creativity itself, however, is an abstraction which can neither be accurately measured nor clearly defined. Consequently, it is difficult to determine whether or not mental illness and creativity are correlated because of the absence of clarity. Though a traditional definition of ‘create’ implies the production of something new and original, creativity is “often conceived as that which has lead to results considered creative by general consensus” (Preti and Miotto). It is moreover impractical to entirely eradicate confusion and disagreement regarding the precise definition and evaluation of creativity. Therefore, the meaning of ‘creativity’ as referred to in this essay is “the ability to create products or ideas which are original and which posses a strong social usefulness” (Barron). Exemplary is John Nash, a mathematician who succumbed to schizophrenia, whose innovative work in game theory earned him the Nobel Memorial Prize for Economic Sciences (1994). Correlation does not imply causation. Accordingly, it is unrealistic to assume that an individual afflicted with mental disorder will possess creative aptitude. Conversely, a highly creative individual does not necessarily have to be afflicted with a psychological illness. Even so, certain mood disorders and psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia seem to affect an individual’s perspective on the world and ability to use seemingly irrelevant information. The recognition of the correspondence between madness and creativity allows one to accept that perhaps mental illness essentially facilitates ingenuity. more

Resolved Question: Is the "reliability improvement process" team identical to the "management" team ?

If project mismanagement occurs, is it likely to occur in the 60 second "reliability improvement program" window ? << The reliability improvement process competes for limited funding with every other program within the production/maintenance organization In real production plants the reliability improvement program is clearly a question of which comes first the chicken or the egg. This requires reliability engineers to have numbers and then sell the numbers to management in 60 second sound bites based on 1) Describe the issue and 2) Tell how we will resolve the issue in time and money. The 60 second sound bites requires that we have good sales tools and the graphics of Crow/AMSAA plots help us sell the program. >> It obviously won't work unless the reliability engineer is the management and the management is the reliability engineer. For Collins project, was the reliability engineer the management and was the management the reliability engineer ? more

Resolved Question: Was there a complete doofus managing the project ?

<<Both MIL-HDBK-189 and TR-652 are methodologies and concepts to assist in reliability growth planning. They provide a structured approach for reliability growth assessments. In general, they are considered from the standpoint that you must begin with some new components and grow the reliability of a system with a development program. Another source of reliability growth information is IEC 61164 (this document was previously numbered as IEC 1164) Reliability Growth-Statistical Test and Estimation Methods. The IEC-61164 document is a product of TC-56 work group which has provided about 50 documents pertaining to reliability and dependability. You can also download a reliability growth paper from the Internet which was written by David W. Coit with the title: “Economic allocation of test times for subsystem-level reliability growth testing” which was published in 1998 in the IIE Transactions (1998) 30, 1143-1151. This paper contains numerous references. For plant equipment and operation, the reliability details described below are a little different: · The primary purpose of our business activities is to run our production facilities to make money and not to make an improvement program · We have old equipment that can only be improved at specific time intervals IF the improvement is truly cost effective · Reliability growth occurs on the device as we using the equipment for its primary purpose as a link in the money making machine without time or resources for validating claims for improvements. · We lack staff and we lack verified knowledge that our planned improvements will function as forecasted · We need to forecast when the next failure is expected so we can plan for replacement/enhancements during schedule turnarounds · The reliability improvement process competes for limited funding with every other program within the production/maintenance organization In real production plants the reliability improvement program is clearly a question of which comes first the chicken or the egg. Resolved Question: Can come one grade me on my essay?

Jun Lu Mr. Brown English 11 26 October 2009 From What I Love What is the one thing that impacted my life? That would certainly come to the answer of one of the beauties I love and enjoy – Piano. For many people, piano is just a musical instrument that they could use as a tool to perform and to entertain others. To me, it is more significant because it changed me from the inside to the outside, from how I think to how I act. It made me a better person in ways of processing problems, handling stress, and made me a happier person because I am more capable of coping with stress. Throughout the years since I was a little kid, I heard about all the beautiful sounds and music that you can create with piano. Though I never had a chance to see one myself, I always paid special attention to the piano melodies in the music. During the summer of freshman year, I went to my friend’s house to do a project together; the first thing I saw when I walked into his house was the piano sitting right there by the wall next to dining table. As I approach the piano I was irresistibly reaching my hand out to touch it and lay my fingers on the different white bars that created diverting sounds. My friend was nice enough that he said he would teach me how to play some songs with it. From that day on, I was addicted to the elegancy of the piano, going to my friend’s house every day after school until the end of the summer learning how to play piano. Since then I’ve always wanted a piano to be around in my house so I can play it whenever possible. Therefore, during sophomore year my dad surprised me with a keyboard for my birthday, I was thrilled. After I got my lovely keyboard, I went on the internet and try to learn something new to play on the piano every day after school. Before I received my keyboard as a gift, I always felt really bored and lonely after I get home from school because there was not anybody home because my parents are consistently working, and I felt that I have nothing to do other than to work on the homework. After I got my keyboard, it drastically changed the feeling that I had when I got home from a tiring day of school work. The keyboard provided me an escaping path from stress and also it keeps me company with good music. Many of my friends say that I am an aggressive to some extent and very impatient person. I quickly lose especially with activities such as fishing. It is fascinating even to me that I had so much patience with the piano where I just sat there learning and practicing repetitively on the same song to get good at it. Because I started to play piano, it changed me as a person that if I just give a little more patience to everything that I do, I would most likely enjoy it more. I use piano as an escape route from stress. Whenever I feel sad and down, I would play music with my keyboard to abreact my feelings. Listening to the euphonic melody coming from the piano also calms me down from stressful situations, such as when I am stuck on a problem in homework and cannot figure it out or when I heard the news that my grandfather was tested positive for cancer and that I just can’t face the fact of it. Piano made me a better person in thinking wise because when I meet up with stress and confusion, I am able to calm myself down and think more thoroughly into the heart of the of the problem and different perception of the situation. Other than the problem handling improvements, I also changed in my habits that would help me succeed school and in the future. My addiction toward the elegancy of the piano, disciplined me to practice repetitively. Thus, it helped me developed the habit of practicing and reviewing the things I do not understand. Ultimately, piano had changed me significantly from the inside to the outside in many ways that turned me into a better person. Because of piano I am capable of thinking more in-depth into the heart of the problems, and competent of coping with stress on a daily basis. As well as assisting me to develop a good habit of practicing and reviewing that would be a perfect tool to help me succeed in life. more

Resolved Question: Which of these airport improvements best exemplify Obama's Porkulus?

The Obama administration used economic stimulus money to pay for 50 airport projects that didn’t meet the grant criteria and approved projects at four airports with a history of mismanaging federal grants, a government watchdog said Monday. Transportation Department Inspector General Calvin Scovel said he plans to examine the Federal Aviation Administration’s process for selecting programs for the $1.1 billion in grant money. Among the projects that Scovel said didn’t meet the FAA’s minimum score was: Example 1 $14 million that went to Akiachak, Alaska, a town of 659 residents, to replace its airfield. The town has a seaplane and is only 14 nautical miles from the state’s fourth busiest airport. Example 2 Nearly $15 million went to another Alaskan town, Ouzinkie, that has 167 residents, to replace its gravel runway. The town has a float-plane landing area in its harbor. Barges also provide cargo delivery from Kodiak, 10 miles away. Example 3 Other projects Scovel said didn’t meet FAA’s threshold were $4.8 billion for a new taxiway in Findlay, Ohio; Example 4 $2.2 million for a runway extension at Wilbur Airport in Washington, Example 5 $2 million for an apron at Warrensburg-Skyhaven Airport in Missouri, Example 6: $909,806 to design a new runway at a small airport near Dover, Del. This is so Joe Biden can personally land here and visit his family. He said those airports don’t provide commercial passenger service and have limited flight operations.Coyote: Giving Biden a personal landing strip in his home state of Deleware at the tax payers expense I am sure qualifies.... Resolved Question: Still believe in the stimulus package?

By BRETT J. BLACKLEDGE, Associated Press Writer Brett J. Blackledge, Associated Press Writer – 23 mins ago WASHINGTON – Vice President Joe Biden proclaimed success beyond expectations Thursday for the $787 billion economic stimulus, but his glowing assessment overlooks many of the program's problems, including delays in releasing money, questionable spending priorities and project picks that are under investigation. In a speech aimed squarely at Republican criticism and public skepticism over the costly program's effectiveness, Biden said accomplishments over the past 100 days provide proof of promises kept when he and President Barack Obama began rolling out the plan earlier this year. "The Recovery Act is doing more, faster and more efficiently and more effectively than most people expected," he said. The stimulus program includes tax cuts, billions for Medicaid and unemployment benefits, and a massive federal investment in education, environmental projects, technology and traditional infrastructure work. The administration has struggled to make the case that the huge spending program has delivered real economic recovery at a time when the nation's unemployment rate threatens to top 10 percent. Biden, Obama's chief stimulus cheerleader, proudly pointed to more than 2,200 highway projects Thursday funded by the program, but didn't mention the growing frustration among contractors that infrastructure money is only trickling out and thus far hasn't delivered the needed boost in jobs. "It is difficult to understand why more communities aren't moving to put their stimulus funds to work while they are experiencing these kinds of job losses," Stephen E. Sandherr, head of the Associated General Contractors of America, said in a statement this week. "Coping with the red tape required by the stimulus ought to be worth it to help put neighbors and friends back to work." The problem is with money for building projects, not roads and highways, Sandherr said. Biden noted 192 airports targeted for improvements with stimulus money, but made no reference to the investigation launched after a federal watchdog raised concerns about how the projects were selected. Transportation Department Inspector General Calvin Scovel said last month he will examine the Federal Aviation Administration's process for selecting programs for the $1.1 billion in grant money. His announcement came after his office discovered that the Obama administration used stimulus money to pay for 50 airport projects that didn't meet the grant criteria and approved projects at four airports with a history of mismanaging federal grants. And Biden praised the more than 2,400 military construction projects paid for with stimulus money, but ignored the millions of dollars in savings the Defense Department lost because it hasn't competitively bid many of the jobs. The Defense Department frequently awards no-bid work to small contractors for repairs at military bases under the stimulus, costing taxpayers millions of dollars more than when businesses compete for the work, an Associated Press analysis of 570 such contracts found. Biden exercised some restraint in his praise for the stimulus' impact. He took a more cautious approach, for example, when asked if his declaration of stimulus success means Americans can now rethink the common view that government is wasteful and inefficient. "I think it's too early to make that decision, to be very blunt about it," he said. And Biden didn't attempt to credit the stimulus alone for signs of broad economic recovery, saying it was one of several government actions that are helping. "Had we done just this and not done the incredibly unpopular thing of bailing out the banks, had we had done this and tried to deal with stabilizing the housing market, had we done only this we would not be where we are," he said. But most of Biden's remarks focused on what he argued is evidence of success with the stimulus, even if his examples were questionable. In making the case that the recovery program was not just economically sound but also good policy, Biden noted that transportation money was replacing unsafe bridges. "It is worthwhile to take some of those 5,000 bridges out there that are ready to collapse, follow what happened in the upper Midwest, and fix them," he said. But most states are spending stimulus money on bridges that are already in good shape, another AP analysis found. Of the 2,476 bridges scheduled to receive stimulus money so far, nearly half have passed inspections with high marks, according to federal data. Those 1,123 sound bridges received such high inspection ratings that they normally would not qualify for federal bridge money, yet they will share in more than $1.2 billion in stimulus money, the AP analysis published in July found. So after all of this do you still think that the 700 billion dollar spending is saving jobs in america? more

Resolved Question: Is Pelosi a hypocrit?

Pelosi, who promised a new era of ethics enforcement in the House of Representatives, snuck a $25 million gift to her husband, Paul Pelosi, in a $15 billion Water Resources Development Act. The project involved renovating ports in Speaker Pelosi's home base of San Francisco. Pelosi just happens to own apartment buildings near the areas targeted for improvement, and will almost certainly experience a significant boost in property value as a result of Pelosi's earmark. Resolved Question: Does Barack Hussein Obama continue to lie about the economic stimulus plan?

This is an article from the Washington PostWASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama promised Monday to deliver more than 600,000 jobs through his $787 billion stimulus plan this summer, with federal agencies pumping billions into public works projects, schools and summer youth programs. Obama is ramping up his stimulus program this week even as his advisers are ramping down expectations about when the spending plan will effect a continuing rise in the nation's unemployment. Many of the stimulus plans that Obama announced Monday already were in the works, including hundreds of maintenance projects at military bases, about 1,600 state road and airport improvements, and federal money states budgeted for 135,000 teachers, principals and school support staff. The administration had always viewed the summer as a peak for stimulus spending, as better weather permitted more public works construction and federal agencies had processed requests from states and others. But Obama now promises an accelerated pace of federal spending over the next few months to boost the economy and produce jobs. "We have a long way to go on our road to recovery but we are going the right way," Obama said in a written statement prepared for his public announcement of the additional summer stimulus activity. "Our measure of progress is the progress the American people see in their own lives. And until that progress is steady and solid, we're going to keep moving forward. We will not grow complacent or rest. Surely and steadily, we will turn this economy around," the statement said. The announcement comes days after the government reported that the number of unemployed continues to rise; the unemployment rate now sits at 9.4 percent, the highest in more than 25 years. Hundreds of thousands of Americans continue to lose jobs each month, although fewer jobs were lost last month than expected. Just how much of an impact Obama's recovery program had on the pace of job losses is up for debate. Obama has claimed as many as 150,000 jobs saved or created by his stimulus plan so far, even as government reports have shown the economy has lost more than 1.6 million jobs since Congress approved funding for the program in February. Republicans remain critical of the stimulus spending, slamming it as a big government program that ultimately will do little for recovery. With only a fraction of the federal money actually spent thus far, it's premature to give the stimulus plan credit for economic trends, congressional Republicans said last week. "I think the economy is just as likely to begin to recover on its own, wholly aside from this, before much of this has an impact. So I'm very skeptical that this massive sort of spending binge that we've engaged in is going to have much of an impact," said Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky. Obama initially offered his stimulus plan as a way to put people back to work, a promise that 3.5 million jobs would be saved or created. The administration's predictions that unemployment would rise no higher than 8 percent already have been shattered, leaving Obama's advisers to caution that job growth takes time, even as recovery spending intensifies. Federal agencies will release billions of stimulus dollars to states in the coming months. Health and Human Services will provide funding for 1,129 health centers to provide expanded service for 300,000 patients; Interior will begin improvements on 107 national parks; Veterans Affairs will start work on 90 medical centers in 38 states; the Justice Department will fund 5,000 law enforcement jobs; the Agriculture Department will begin 200 new rural waste and water system projects; and the Environmental Protection Agency will begin or accelerate the cleanup of 20 Superfund sites. At the same time federal money for these projects is released, the nation's unemployment rate likely will continue to increase, said Austan Goolsbee, a member of the White House Council of Economic Advisers. "I don't think there's any question it's going to be a rough patch not just in the immediate term, but for a little bit of time," Goolsbee said Sunday, "because you've got to turn the economy around, and jobs and job growth tend to come after you turn the economy around. So it's likely going to be a little higher." Obama senior adviser David Axelrod argues that the stimulus program is working and points to fewer jobs lost in May than the month before as a hopeful sign of economic recovery. Improvements in unemployment numbers naturally come later, he said. "It's going to take some time for these unemployment numbers to turn around, for the momentum to completely stop and turn in the other direction," Axelrod said. "It feels as if we're moving and the stimulus package now is not nearly done, it's just really at its beginnings." Goolsbee spoke on "FOX News Sunday;" Axelrod was interviewed on CNN's "State of the Union". more

Voting Question: How could I summerize this paragraph?

With only the most important facts? I just need the general information on geothermal energy. Geothermal power (from the Greek roots geo, meaning earth, and thermos, meaning heat) is power extracted from heat stored in the earth. This geothermal energy originates from the original formation of the planet, from radioactive decay of minerals, and from solar energy absorbed at the surface. It has been used for space heating and bathing since ancient roman times, but is now better known for generating electricity. About 10 GW of geothermal electric capacity is installed around the world as of 2007, generating 0.3% of global electricity demand. An additional 28 GW of direct geothermal heating capacity is installed for district heating, space heating, spas, industrial processes, desalination and agricultural applications.[1] Geothermal power is cost effective, reliable, and environmentally friendly, but has previously been geographically limited to areas near tectonic plate boundaries. Recent technological advances have dramatically expanded the range and size of viable resources, especially for direct applications such as home heating. Geothermal wells tend to release greenhouse gases trapped deep within the earth, but these emissions are much lower than those of conventional fossil fuels. As a result, geothermal power has the potential to help mitigate global warming if widely deployed instead of fossil fuels.[1] Prince Piero Ginori Conti tested the first geothermal generator on 4 July 1904, at the Larderello dry steam field in Italy.[2] The largest group of geothermal power plants in the world is located at The Geysers, a geothermal field in California, United States.[3] As of 2004, five countries (El Salvador, Kenya, the Philippines, Iceland, and Costa Rica) generate more than 15% of their electricity from geothermal sources. Twenty-four countries generated a total of 56,786 GWh (204 PJ) of electricity from geothermal power in 2005, accounting for 0.3% of worldwide electricity consumption. This output is growing by 3% annually, thanks to a growing number of plants as well as improvements in their capacity factors. Because a geothermal power station does not rely on transient sources of energy, unlike, for example, wind turbines or solar panels, its capacity factor can be quite large; up to 90% has been demonstrated.[4] Their global average was 73% in 2005.[1] The global capacity was 10 GW in 2007. Geothermal electric power plants have been limited to the edges oftectonic plates until recently. Geothermal electric plants have until recently been built exclusively on the edges of tectonic plates where high temperature geothermal resources are available near the surface. The development of binary cycle power plants and improvements in drilling and extraction technology has opened the hope that enhanced geothermal systems might be viable over a much greater geographical range. A demonstration project has recently been completed in Landau-Pfalz, Germany, and others are under construction in Soultz-sous-Forêts, France and Cooper Basin,Australia. more

Resolved Question: Will the govt demand everyone get swine flu vaccinated, and then put poisons in the vaccines to depopulate us?

At least three US federal laws should concern all Americans and suggest what may be coming - mandatory vaccinations for hyped, non-existant threats, like H1N1 (Swine Flu). Vaccines and drugs like Tamiflu endanger human health but are hugely profitable to drug company manufacturers. The Project BioShield Act of 2004 (S. 15) became law on July 21, 2004 "to provide protections and countermeasures against chemical, radiological, or nuclear agents that may be used in a terrorist attack against the United States by giving the National Institutes of Health contracting flexibility, infrastructure improvements, and expediting the scientific peer review process, and streamlining the Food and Drug Administration approval process of countermeasures." In other words, the FDA may now recklessly approve inadequately tested, potentially dangerous vaccines and other drugs if ever the Secretaries of Health and Human Services (HHS) or Defense (DOD) declare a national emergency, whether or not one exists and regardless of whether treatments available are safe and effective. Around $6 billion or more will be spent to develop, produce, and stockpile vaccines and other drugs to counteract claimed bioterror agents. more

Voting Question: PROJECT SCENARIO FOR C# (C-SHAPE),PLEASE HELP!!?

You own a small bookstore, and have a group of loyal customers. Since there are only a few purchases a month, you haven’t invested in a computer or cash register to calculate purchase totals and tax. Recently you’ve noticed a large increase in sales, and wish to invest in a cash register to make sure there are no errors in the customers’ purchase price. A friend sells you a cash register for $50.00 but it doesn’t calculate the full amount of the purchase (the tax rate is 9.50%). You really want to use the cash register as soon as possible, so you must program it to calculate the entire purchase amount. You must create a solution that will enable you to start using the cash register to process customer purchases. 1. Define the problem • Clearly define what the problem is that you wish to create a solution for, and how this program will solve the problem. 2. Resolved Question: Unknown dead insect nest? Is it safe?

I am posting this question on behalf of my father, who is working on our house and sent me an email with the following contents: "I am doing a home improvement project and I am currently in the process of removing the sheetrock covering the walls and the insulation. After removing the sheetrock on one of the walls I discovered this inside the wall. The material is paper thin. There is the main "nest" but other areas in the cavity are covered with the same material. There is absolutely no insect activity of any sort. Look at the following entry and determine if the information is being presented as fact, opinion, theory, or propaganda. From Chicago Tribune (4/26/00): Study Confirms That Racism Infects America's Juvenile Justice System by William Neikirk Even as Congress ponders cracking down on juvenile crime, a study released Tuesday said America's juvenile justice system—from arrest to confinement—is unfairly slanted against minority youths. The statistics cited in a report prepared by National Council on Crime and Delinquency, a criminal justice think tank, gives new ammunition to the claim of civil rights groups that racism infects every step of the country's legal process. But it may not change the course of a get-tough juvenile justice measure being pushed by Republicans and some Democrats under which more violent youthful offenders could be prosecuted as adults. That bill is near is the last step of the legislative process, a House-Senate conference committee. The report said that when whites and minority youths were charged with the same offenses, black youths were six times more likely to be incarcerated than white youths with the same criminal backgrounds. Hispanic youths were three times more likely than white youths to be confined. The Building Blocks for Youth Initiative, a national project aimed at addressing unfairness in juvenile justice, commissioned the study. Major backers include the American Bar Association Juvenile Justice Center, Youth Law Center, Minorities in Law Enforcement, the Rockefeller Foundation, and the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) said the findings were not surprising. While it appears Congress is unlikely to alter legislation regarding minorities who get into trouble, he cited Illinois Gov. George Ryan's moratorium on the death penalty and the controversy over racial profiling as signs of improvement. a. propaganda b. theory c. fact d. opinion Save answer Next Question Finish more

Resolved Question: Am I going to get fired?

I have worked at my current company for 5 months. About 3 months into the job, my manager gave an initial review that he did not think things were going too well and put me on a performance improvement plan. Later, she told me things had gotten better, but I still needed to improve. Last week, I was given my first official review and the results said that I did not meet expectations. They also mentioned to me that they would be having a discussion with HR on making a recommendation on whether I could stay, be transferred to a new job or be fired. They are meeting with HR next week and I am sick to my stomach trying to guess what the outcome will be. I have been extremely busy at work and keep getting assigned more projects, so I wonder if that sounds like I will be fired. At the same time, I was told to work with another woman who is my senior as a coaching mechanism. However, I feel as if they are having me slowly transition my projects to her temporarily, while they find my replacement. There is a job description on our company website that is very similar to mine. Recently, the rest of my team moved with the exception of another girl and me. Even though the moving and relocation process is still happening, it is weird to me that I have still not been told whether I will be moving or not. One other person at my levl was not moved either.I asked and was given a wishy-washy answer. He said he would be talking to HR to make that determination. My boss has been EXTREMELY nice to me recently. Is this a good or bad sign? more

Resolved Question: Did Collins new submarine project management have any of the problems noted with NASA January 28, 1986 ?

Q/<<Did ISO9000 cause the Challenger Launch Decision, January 28, 1986 ? Is there an attempt to apply spin to pretend that ISO9000 was invented after January 28, 1986 ?>> A(by yahoo answer M R)/<<ISO 9000 is a generic name given to a family of standards developed to provide a framework around which a quality management system can effectively be implemented. # monitoring processes to ensure they are effective; # keeping adequate records; # checking output for defects, with appropriate and corrective action where necessary; # regularly reviewing individual processes and the quality system itself for effectiveness; and # facilitating continual improvement To quote Patrick O’Connor (1991): “Recognise that high quality and reliability are achieved by good management, in the widest sense. Good management of engineering includes paying attention to excellence in design and production, adopting a totally integrated product directed team approach, and a commitment to training at a level that is far in excess of that currently practised by western companies. This training must include a thorough grounding in appropriate industrial statistical methods and application" The CAIB report noted the Manned Space Flight program had confused lines of authority, responsibility, and accountability in a “manner that almost defies explanation.” It concluded that the current organizational structure was a strong contributor to the negative safety culture, and that structural changes are necessary to reverse these factors. I could add more, but there definitely was a spin directly related to the failure of proper application of ISO9000 policies and procedures. If anything, the Challenger accident "woke up" the scientific community, with the understanding that "the need to launch for social, political and economic reasons" certainly was subordinate to the necessary quality control measures needed to ensure the quality of all safety systems. Resolved Question: my first mock draft update ill update these every thursday until draft day?

Right now I'm only breaking down round 1 because it's way too early with the draft process still taking shape with bowl games, the NFL Playoffs, and the combine. There are still pieces to the draft puzzle that need to be connected. Anyway let's get to the mock draft. 2009 NFL draft I'll only do the top 15 picks because the draft boards won't be official on where San Diego has the 16th pick right now and that won't last. So that's why I'm only doing the top 15 and I don't want to make the details too long. 1. Detroit Lions Matthew Stafford I'm convinced after his monster game against Michigan State the Lions will take him #1. Sam Bradford might fall a few picks after losing to Florida next thursday. 2. St. Louis Rams Andre Smith LT/RT Alabama Smith can play both tackle positions and with Orlando Pace still in the league the Rams will start him out at right tackle and move him to left tackle if Pace gets injured or retires. 3. Kansas City Chiefs Sam Bradford QB Oklahoma The Chiefs need a signal caller for the future and they need one who plays in a spread offense like the spread offense the Chiefs have. 4. Seattle Seahawks Michael Crabtree WR Texas Tech I wouldn't be surprised if Michael Oher got selected here since Walter Jones is aging and they will need a left tackle to replace him when he retires. The Seahawks can't afford to pass up on someone as talented as Crabtree. 5. Cleveland Browns Aaron Curry OLB Wake Forest The Browns could draft Chris Wells here, but they need major help on defense and with Willie McGinnest retiring it's time to draft your linebacker of the future. 6. Cincinnati Bengals The Bengals have solid tackles in Stacey Andrews and Levi Jones this team needs 3 improvements protecting the quarterback, getting to the quarterback and drafting a solid runningback for the long term. I have the Bengals drafting Brian Orakpo. Look for the Bengals to acquire one of 2 top 10 runningbacks next year in Javhid Best and LeSean McCoy. I think Palmer can improve the o line if he works with them constantly in training camp. 7. Oakland Raiders Michael Oher LT Ole Miss If Al Davis has the opportunity to draft Oher he should pray at a local church on draft day and be greatful and thankful for the opportunity to draft a tackle who can protect Jamarcus Russell for years in the NFL. 8. Jacksonville Jaguars Eugene Monroe LT Virginia I know Khalif Barnes was projected to be good this year, but he gave up way too many sacks Monroe is the perfect replacement at #8. 9. Green Bay Packers Michael Johnson I think the Packers secondary is talented enough to get better in training camp with Charles Woodson and Al Harris you can either improve your D Line and get more sacks by taking Michael Johnson or you can make a minor improvement to a so so dismal secondary in selecting Malcom Jenkins. I think getting to the Quarterback is a first priority for the Packers instead of taking a cornerback. 10. San Francisco 49ers Malcom Jenkins CB Ohio State Another steal in the draft Nate Clements went to Ohio State he is pretty good and since he is getting up in age he can help another former Buckeye become an elite corner at the next level. 11. Buffalo Bills Everrette Brown DE Florida State Brown has put up very good sack numbers at Florida State and the Bills should draft him. No one on the Bills defense had more than 4 sacks. Aaron Schobel got injured against the Cardinals so if the 2 play defensive end next to each other along with Marcus Stroud in the middle at defensive tackle looking to rebound from a dismal year this team could become a playoff contender in Buffalo. I considered Maualuga here because Paul Posluzney was an Left Outside linebacker at Penn State they could switch Paul to left outisde linebacker puting Maualuga at left outside linebacker and Kawika Mitchel at right outisde linebacker or middle linebacker if they still have Angelo Crowell then this team could go to a 3-4 defense scheme like the Steelers, Taylor Mays is another option too with Terrence McGee, Leodis McKelvin, Donte Witner, and the need of a free safety to replace Laywer Milloy. In the end I see the Bills taking Brown. 12. Denver Broncos Rey Maualuga MLB USC Maualuga is the best middle linebacker in the country as far as college football goes and Broncos need a middle linebacker. Maualuga is there man here at #12. 13. Washington Redskins James Laurinitus MLB Ohio State The Redskins will take the best player available here and London Fletcher is near retirement I know the Redskins have HB Blades out of Pittsburgh, but he was drafted in the 6th round and only had a rating of 93 on NCAA Football 07 which means he's not that good. Laurinitus had better ratings than 93 on NCAA Football 08 and 09, but who cares about that. The bottom line is that Laurinitus is a can't miss prospect. 14. New Orleans Saints Brandon Spikes MLB Florida with the Jonathan Vilma issue in hand the Saints need Brandon Spikes or another middle linebaI had the Texans drafting Taylor Mays and I had the rest of first round projections but the add details piece of crap deleted my picks and now I'm all pissed off I'm gonna watch the Penn State vs USC game to calm down hopefully the Trojans are winning. Even though I'm an Ohio State fan I have more respect for Pete Carroll and what he's done to USC that I do towards that piece of #5it Joe Pa. more

Resolved Question: Would someone please give me suggestions on how to improve my supplementary essay?

I am writing an letter/essay to Ball State in order to explain my poor highschool grades. I am hoping to prove that I have learned from my mistakes and that I would be a good choice for their school. Am I on the write track? Would you suggest any improvement? And lastly, is this a convincing letter? Any help is appreciated! Thank you! I am writing in regards to my high school grades. Although many associate poor grades with sloppiness or laziness, my poor academics are rooted in my obsession and passion for art. Ever since I was a child in elementary school I have had a great love for painting and drawing. I could spend hours on end completely immersed in my hobby. My attention could hardly be shaken from my projects until I was satisfied that they were complete. Once high school came around, I began to see this as a problem. My passion for art overwhelmed my thoughts to the point where I failed to keep my priorities in order. I would come home from school and instead of diligently working on my homework or studying for tests, I would toss all cares aside and begin to work obsessively on my next project. As I continued to do this, my grades continued to slip. When I finally began to realize the importance of my grades, I had already put myself into a predicament. It was too late, I had nothing to show for my past years of high school. At the beginning of my junior year I decided to start anew. I bought a planner and wrote down all of my assignments on a daily basis. I even gave myself a scheduled time each evening in which I could concentrate on nothing but my art. This new process of planning my time proved successful and by the time the first semester ended I was quite proud of my progress. Second semester came around and I was prepared to continue this process but this time something unexpected happened. I was put in charge of designing and painting a large, elaborate backdrop for the high school production of The King and I. For the next two months I was planning, painting, and acting for up to six hours every weeknight. I was exhausted. Though I recruited as many people as I could, I still couldn’t help but be involved in every detail of the project. However, as stressful as this was for me, the enjoyment I received from it outweighed everything else. After all was said and done I returned to my normal high school life to find that I had once again fallen behind in many of my classes. As the semester came to a close I struggled to catch up but soon realized that the damage I had done could not be undone. I feel that by making these mistakes early in life I have gained the tools needed to avoid making these mistakes in my adult life. For one I have learned that scheduling is my friend. Giving myself a certain time to do something lets me concentrate completely on the task at hand. In the end more is accomplished. Also I have better learned how to rate the importance of a task. Although something may seem important at the time I must look at the pig picture and decide how much something will benefit me in the future. Finally I have learned that I have a natural gift to be able to work obsessively hard on anything that interests me and I have been practicing in using this talent for tasks that don’t interest me quite as much but are necessary. Over the summer I have worked to find a college to suit me and have found Ball State University to have quite a desirable art program. I feel that this school can help me to cultivate the discipline I need and learn the skills necessary to succeed as a professional artist. I would like to thank you for your time and careful consideration. I would be honored to attend school here and am looking forward to being able to prove I can succeed under the college level workload. more

Resolved Question: Need advise and opinions on available choices?

My production unit is shutting down, I've been offered two choices for transfer: 1. Into another production unit - to infiltrate and gather intelligence on their poor performance. I'll be some sort of like a management black ops operative. This is actually my specialty, James Bond and Ethan Hunt looks like babies in diapers when compared to me. 2. Into the group's (what I mean group is that my employers have multiple upstream and downstream operation units throughout the country) Project Team to be a part of a larger scale assault team to carry out process improvement projects on the newly acquired Business Management System. It will be a totally new field requiring IT knowledge that I have none. I'm still wondering why the Group's Project Team head have to come all the way from HQ and personally offer me the job? Please give me your opinions based on the above choices that I have. more

Resolved Question: Did developers have "reliability growth" information for Collins submarine software, or was it a case of "best?

effort" - "get in there and fix it" ? <<Reliability Growth is the improvement in a reliability parameter over a period of time due to changes in product design or the manufacturing process.>> Reason for question - the project always read as if someone was pulling the rug under other people more

Resolved Question: Constant Criticism - how to handle ?

One-year ago my BF moved into house I aleady owned. House was a little cluttered as I had not fully moved in myself and had lots of boxes not yet unpacked in the garage and a spare bedroom. In addition I had not fully furnished place yet and am still lacking some storage to put away all my stuff. He is constantly aggravated and critical about how "messy" I am and just wants me to get rid of my "stuff". I keep the place presentable but sometimes get behind on housework (like putting all the laundry away) because I am also working on projects. (Cleaning out garage, building IKEA furniture to improve storage situation etc). He claims he can not help me do anything because "i won't let him throw anything away". When he does help me clean he will say "where did you get this ugly painting -- you don't want to keep this do you". Often these will be things that I love and carefully picked out for my home! I usually agree to sell or get rid of, but once in awhile I really like something and defend it and he goes crazy (for example I had a frosted-glass oval platter that I often used to hold appetizers for parties -- he hated it and it was completely inocuous -- not flowered or anything!) I work full-time, have the responsibility of being the "breadwinner", and just had a baby 7 weeks ago. I feel like I am stretched to the limit and need to be cleaning 24/7 to please him. I need some downtime on the weekends too..... When he nags me about the garage, I point out that I least I keep on top of the dishes and laudry and then he says to let him do the laundry and dishes so I can FINALLY get the garage done. Problem is he does not then do those things - I would have to ask him "can you do the dishes so I can work on the garage". He wants me just to throw away everything in boxes since "I have not used it this year". Well I have camping equipment, sentimental items etc in boxes so I want to sort them out etc.... (this is why I must clean because he said he would just toss all my "junk"). So I spend two full days on the garage and get it clean giving much of my stuff to the goodwill in the process, and all I hear is why aren't the towels clean, why did you leave these books on the table etc.... I feel like I'm in continual "what have you done lately" land. I always admit I'm not the neatest person, but If I point out areas of improvement i.e. keeping up with dishes he says "what do you want a gold medal?". Why can't he accept that this is an ongoing project instead of nagging me weekly? When he keeps saying "this place is a mess" it makes me feel horrible because I am doing the best that I can and don't feel that he needs to keep reminding me since I have acknowledged the mess and I always making effort to improve. I should also point out that he leaves his shoes everywhere, magazines on bathroom floor, dirty glasses around the house, jackets on backs of chairs etc. But if I ever defend myself by pointing out his flaws he says "yes but at least I am TRYING to be neat". As though I am trying "not to be neat"??? He actually said "i don't know why you don't want to be organized". Blunt: Thanks for the totally nasty response and Congrats on your totally anal-retentive OCD life. When you are dead I am sure people will comment on your spotless home. And if you have a slow death I am sure you will regret all the hours not spent cleaning. Anyway. I have worked hard my whole life. Put myself through college working full time and now have a job that eats 12 hours of my life each day but pays the mortgage and bought me a little convertible that I like to drive on my downtime. Prior to BF one weekend day would be for fun and one for work. Now he wants me to spend my weekends working? He has job, but it is my income that supports us (3x his salary). And he is OCD. I am not a compulsive hoarder, I just have not been able to fully unpack given, my job, being pregnant, and wanting to travel some before the baby was born. Going to Europe and Hawaii has enriched my life more than sparkling faucets ever will. My house is clean, but I am not in a cleanliness competition. more

Voting Question: Database Designing Issues -- Needs urgent suggestions?

I am in the process of developing an ERP which should have the capability of handling bulk data. My database is ready but i am bit confused that whether my database architecture is perfect or not on following grounds : 1. I am having lengthy tables of up to 50 columns but all these 50 columns will not contain any redundant values so is it a good idea to keep single table for this or shd we keep it in multiple tables ? 2. I am using transactions and stored procedures for saving , updating and deleting so if i will save the data in one table will it affect the performance of the system later on during the stage or not ? 3. How i will ensure that database integrity is being maintained along with the fast accessibility. 4. How to make sure that database changes are very rare so that development time line doesn't gets affected. Please let me know if you need more details about the database and project for better clarification i will be highly obliged if i can get good suggestions for improvements in the database. Thanks more

Resolved Question: Can someone please revise and make all corrections to this memo?

The Executive Committee plans to meet on June 7 at two o’clock in Conference room A to develop a strategic plan for implementing technology changes. At it’s meeting on March 15th, the comittee discussed our current computer an network systems with Ashley Price a leading Consultant with Central Technology services, who we hired on Gina’s recommendation. Ms. Price agreed to apprise our situation, and to report back to us.2 weeks ago Ms. Price called Rick in our Personal Department and asked whether she could interview 5 Managers and about 20 experienced knowledgeable computer users early next week? Rick is scheduling 45 minute slots for managers and thirty minute slots for computer users. The interviews will be held at our new facility on Highway Ten on the South side of the city. This sight is more convenient for staff then the building at 1 Main Street. All managers should do they’re best to acommodate requests form Rick for staff and managerial time. If you are unable to schedule an interview please call me immediately so i can choose someone else to participate. Ms. Prices has prepared a preliminary report which is attached. As we might of expected, it recomends extensive changes. To slow and lacking sufficient memory, the report states that our 486’s cannot meet our projected processing and storage needs. It also points out the that computers cannot run the newer (8.0) version of our office suite. Ms. Price thinks we should replace it with Pentium IV computers with 256 MB or RAM, 40-GHz hard drives, and nineteen” monitors. She also proposes that we upgrade our office suite and invest in top of the line Firewall and Virus Protection Software. In addition Ms. Price suggests switching to broadband Internet connections. The report also analyzes our data storage and and file-sharing problems. According to Ms Price an NAS (network attached storage server is the answer. On Page 8 of the report, she says “an NAS server will plug into your network easy. It will appear in users desktops as an extra drive. An NAS server can back up any type file, and can offer you’re employees quick easy and secure access to shared files.” Ms. Price adds that NAS servers are cost-effective, and can be upgraded easily to meet our data storage and file-sharing needs. The cost of all these improvements are 27% higher than anticipated. If we except Ms. Price’s advise, our Long Range Budget committee will have to determine the affect these expeinditures will have on our budget before we precede. This upgraded technology will sure save our empoyees a grate deal of time and make them even more productive. We must compliment our investment in hardware and software with a investment in our personal. We have invited 4 companies to submit proposals to provide us with Web based training materials. I will review these materials. And will report on all these developments at the June meeting. Please review Ms. Prices report; and be prepared to coment on it at the meeting. You are welcome too right or stop by before then to discuss their conclusions and your department’s needs. We appreciate the efforts you have made to insure that the technology we choose will work good, grow with us, and be cost-effective.  more

Resolved Question: Has this pinpointed a potential problem (think Collins project) ?

<THE EFFECTIVENESS OF CORRECTIVE ACTIONS MADE TO RELIABILITY, AVAILABILITY, MAINTAINABILITY AND DEPENDABILITY DEFICIENCIES OF THE MEDIUM TACTICAL VEHICLE REPLACEMENT Andrew F. Jensen, III-Lieutenant Colonel, United States Marine Corps B.S., United States Naval Academy, 1983 Master of Science in Operations Research-September 2002 Advisor: Lyn R. Whitaker, Department of Operations Research Second Reader: Robert A. Koyak, Department of Operations Research In an effort to streamline the acquisition process of the Medium Tactical Vehicle Replacement (MTVR), the Combat Support and Logistics Equipment (CSLE) Directorate, Marine Corps Systems Command, took the innovative, but somewhat risky, approach of conducting concurrent developmental test and evaluation (DT&E) and operational test and evaluation (OT&E). Due to numerous reliability, availability, maintainability, and durability deficiencies during the OT&E, the MTVR was not recommended as operationally suitable and had to undergo additional operational testing, thus, negating any savings by conducting concurrent testing. The manufacturer of the MTVR made numerous improvements during the DT&E that were tested during the DT&E and during the second OT&E. In future acquisition programs, an analysis, based on existing data and used in advance or in conjunction with testing, could quantify the risk and provide the Program Manager (PM) and the operational test agency with a way to streamline the OT&E and thereby save time and resources while fielding an effective and suitable vehicle. The purpose of this thesis is to use the recent experience of CSLE scheduling a concurrent DT&E and OT&E of the MTVR as a case study to show how an analytical approach can be used to guide the PM in making decisions regarding the streamlining of testing. Resolved Question: In high-profile safety-critical projects, such as Collins submarine I guess, what system drives the management?

Question prompted by the following insight : "It's not only the programmers who are at fault, it's also the system that drives the management. In most kinds of organized industry the need to do the politically correct thing vastly overcomes the need to make and apply the theoretically correct decision. Often this latter thing requires one to make an improvement on the present programme or process for which there is in managerial terms no time nor budget available. So the fault remains, often causing a great deal more expense after due credit has been given for the present results. There is no investigation about it, the need to correct it and proceed to produce output is too strong. We are not driven by the need to do accurate work but instead the cheap and timely result is the aim. When will they ever learn?" Above terrific insight was in response to a question <<Are computer programmers extremely naive ? (Not individually, but the organization they work in)?>> more

Resolved Question: Is this pertinent to high-profile safety-critical programming projects we read about ?

When will they ever learn?>> Above terrific insight was in response to a question <<Are computer programmers extremely naive ? (Not individually, but the organization they work in)? At Cadbury Schweppes, people are paid to notice if there is a malfunction in the automatic canning machine. If the machine malfunctioned, and no-one noticed, tens of thousands of defective packs of cans might be packed. Computer programmers (and I suppose I mean the admirals and politicians running the organization, because they are the people who are doing the real programming) don't seem to be being paid to notice major malfunctions. People don't seem to possess the tools they need to help them make usable suggestions for improvement. Suggestions need to be able to be captured, and then considered for costs and benefits, and the best suggestions, if any, used. Without proper tools to assess the quality of suggested improvements, the organization is reduced to having to "implement" a few haphazard suggestions in order to show it is "on top of" the current problems. So an organization, perhaps responsible for safety-critical software, is reduced to implementing suggestions proposed by staff. [A/Have a look at this code the supplier is planning to use. B/This angle variable is in the range 0 to 360 degrees. Shouldn't that be 0 to 359.9 ?] The customer's suggestion to change the code to 359.9 may be poorly thought through. This is an example of a poorly thought-through "improvement".>>  more

Resolved Question: can anybody help?

Jane retired from the military at thirty-five, and is currently enrolled in college to accomplish her life-long dream of earning her Bachelor’s degree. During her run in the military, Jane prepared many statements and presentations for her supervisors. However, she never followed any particular writing protocol or process to prepare these presentations. She simply reviewed the information she was expected to prepare, wrote what she felt was right, and sent it on for review. Jane is now in Unit 9 of her first term with Kaplan, and she has used the same method for preparing her projects for her courses. For each of these projects, she has received various suggestions for improvement from her instructors, and she would like to implement those suggestions in her writing. Writing is something she enjoys and she writes well, but she has never had to focus on organizing her thoughts for a project for school. As a highly motivated individual, Jane would like to succeed in college, just as she did in the military, but she is not sure where to begin the process of preparing her final projects for school. Considering her concerns regarding organization and clarity, what advice can you give Jane? Jane already knows her ideas and statements are correct, but she knows that she needs to provide references to support her arguments. What method should she use for citing the works she used in her final project, and how should this method be used? What type of information should Jane include in her final project for Academic Strategies? In other words, what type of information should typically be included in a final assessment of any course? Why should Jane be skeptical about researching the Internet for informational sources? How can she evaluate her sources to make sure they are valuable? Jane is obviously anxious about her writing skills; what should she do to work through this anxiety regarding the final project? more

Calls me into the office and laid into me that I should have asked her for a wolow up meeting. my take is that I felt if she wanted to talk she would ask to meet me. I dont think it was for me to say did you like it or what do you think. For all I know she was too busy and didnt get to it. I had even asked around and 3 different people 92 at work and 1 outside of work) all said just let it be. Was I right or should I have said something to her rather then wait for her to get to me? BTW if it matters this is a large international defense contractor type firm.BTW to explain the typos that Kurt mentioned ... actually I am extremely fastidious and obsessive about those things - including writing a document and leaving it overnight so I can re-read it the next morning to see it fresh. I wrote this literally running out the door to catch the bus so I didn't proof read it. One thing I left out was that I actually had the document read and reviewed by 2 co-workers who thought it was excellent (I didn't think that info was pertinent to the discussion). more

Voting Question: can anyone help me answer these questions plzzz?

Jane is obviously anxious about her writing skills; what should she do to work through this anxiety regarding the final project? more

Resolved Question: Historic home registry?

My last house was a 1920s bungalow. I had a lot of fun tearing out carpet, refinishing wood trim and floors, updating the kitchen and bathroom. I did it just to make a nicer place for myself to live, but in the process, discovered that I really enjoy taking on home improvement projects and working at them in my spare time. My wife and I are looking for a bigger house, and we are thinking about getting a big old English Tudor house that was built in 1893. It is among the older houses in the city. The current owner claims that has been owned by some important people in the town’s history and that it could be put on the historic home registry. I know that there are some tax benefits, and also some drawbacks as far as regulations on what you can do to the house as you restore it. Does anyone have experience dealing with historic homes? What would one have to do to get a house put on the registry? Is it even worth doing? more
