Resolved Question: What are some stastics involving illegal aliens and why they must go home?

Some other things you probably didn't know: www.usillegalaliens.com •Cities that receive the largest numbers of immigrants also have twice the unemployment rate, 40% more people living in poverty, and 40% more serious crime per capita than cities with few or no immigrant arrivals. •Some 11.2 million immigrants arrived in the USA between 1990 and 2000. This, added to the 6.4 million children born to immigrants living in the USA, accounts for almost 70% of the US population growth in the past decade. •mmigrants now represent more than one in every ten US residents, the highest percentage in 70 years. •Over the next 50 years, the US Census Bureau projects that immigration will cause the population of the United States to increase from its present 270 million to more than 400 million. •Nationwide, 33% of Third World immigrants who settled in the USA since 1990, live in poverty, nearly three times the rate for US-born natives. Some 36% of immigrants failed to finish high school, more than double the percentage for US-born nationals. •About 15% of US citizens fall below the poverty line, compared to 29% of non-citizens. About 11% of non-citizens have incomes less than 50% of the poverty line, compared to 6% of citizens. •The number of impoverished people in the USA's immigrant-headed households nearly tripled from 2.7 million in 1979 to 7.7 million in 1997. During that same period, the number of poor households headed by immigrants increased by 123% while the number of immigrant households increased by 68%. •According to Forbes Magazine, a greater proportion of the US population is currently living in poverty than what was the case three decades ago. According to Forbes Magazine, Significantly, Hispanics accounted for a statistical 0% of the nation's poor in 1959. •Hispanics first entered the tables in 1972, making up 1.1% of the USA's poor in that year. By 1996, Hispanics made up 2.7% of the nation's poor - almost equivalent to the Black figure. Forbes Magazine identified the leap in Hispanic poverty rates as being dueto their numbers being "fed by immigration." •According to the US Census Bureau, Current Population Survey, March 2001, some 22.1% of Blacks were below the official poverty line. This compares with 21.2% of Hispanics; 10.8% of Asians and Pacific Islanders; and 7.5% of White non-Hispanics. •According to the Puerto Rican/Hispanic Institute for the Elderly in New York, about 23.8% of elderly Hispanics in the United States live in poverty, with no prospects of improvement in their situation. •In 1997, 25% of all children in California were living below the poverty line. •The number of children living in poverty in California had increased by more than 3% from 1990 to 1997. •In the Appalachia, Mississippi Delta, Black Hills, and Los Angeles areas, more than 30% of Hispanics are below the poverty line. •According to a survey by the University of California at San Francisco and the Field Institute, Latinos are 13 times more likely to be part of the working poor -- defined in the survey as a family off our earning less than $20,000. •Denver's five poorest neighborhoods are populated mostly by Hispanics that only speak Spanish, particularly in the northern part of the city. In these neighborhoods, 80% of the children receive food coupons, and are responsible for 37% of the city's crime rate. •The number of people in poverty living in immigrant households in Arizona has nearly tripled to 330,000 from 113,000 during the 1990s. During that same time, immigrant households rose to 41%, from 20% of the total of poverty-level households. •In 1996, according to the Immigration and Naturalization Service, 1.2 million newcomers joined the US population - yet fewer than 5% were admitted because of their job skills. Most of the rest were allowed in because they were relatives of US citizens or other immigrants or were refugees, and a quarter of the total were illegal immigrants. •During the 1990s, more than 1.3 million people with less than a high school education entered the USA. Ofthose who arrived in this decade, 34.4% were school dropouts. •In 1998, nearly 40% of immigrants had less than a high school education - double the share for natives, according to the 1990 census figures. The gap widens when grade school education is considered. Some 23% of immigrants have less than nine years of education, compared with just 4% of Americans. Only 8% of California Latinos have a bachelor's degree or higher, compared with 43% of Asians, 33% of whites and 24% of African Americans, according to the California Research Bureau. •Latinos in California have the highest high school dropout rate (45%), lowest college graduation rate (8%) and, not surprisingly, the lowest median income ($14,560). •The Latino education gap in California is not new. Previous studies showthe same was true as far back as the 1940s more

Resolved Question: Is Republican Governor McDonnell lying again in his opposition speech?

WRONG ON ECONOMIC RECOVERY Gov. Bob McDonnell: Today, the federal government is simply trying to do too much. Last year, we were told that massive new federal spending would create more jobs 'immediately' and hold unemployment below 8%. In the past year, over three million Americans have lost their jobs, yet the Democratic Congress continues deficit spending, adding to the bureaucracy, and increasing the national debt on our children and grandchildren. [McDonnell Prepared Remarks, 1/27/10] CBO: The American Recovery And Reinvestment Act Has Created Up To 1.6 Million American Jobs. According to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office, "CBO now estimates that in the third quarter of calendar year 2009, ARRA's policies raised real GDP by between 1.2 percent and 3.2 percent, lowered the unemployment rate by between 0.3 and 0.9 percentage points, and increased the number of people employed by between 600,000 and 1.6 million compared with what those values would have been otherwise." [CBO, 11/30/09; emphasis added] CBPP: Recovery Act Is Keeping 6 Million Americans Out Of Poverty. According to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, "Although meant chiefly to help the broad economy, the stimulus plan Congress enacted earlier this year (the American Recovery and Re-Investment Act of 2009, or ARRA) had the important secondary effect of significantly ameliorating the recession's impact on poverty. This analysis, which comes one day before the Census Bureau will release updated poverty figures (for 2008), examines seven of the recovery act's provisions - two improvements in unemployment insurance, three tax credits for working families, an increase in food stamps, and a one-time payment for retirees, veterans, and people with disabilities - and finds that they alone are preventing more than 6 million Americans from falling below the poverty line and are reducing the severity of poverty for 33 million more. Those 6 million people include more than 2 million children and over 500,000 seniors. This analysis includes state-specific estimates for California, Texas, Florida, New York, and Illinois." Resolved Question: Do you have to pay to get the nba 2k10 patch?

Patch Notes: GENERAL * Improved game performance in all arenas and camera angles. * Corrected a framerate issue that was causing noticeable slowdown in the paint in specific arenas. * Corrected a framerate issue that was causing noticeable slowdown during NBA D-League games. * Fixed an issue where Coach Settings were not properly saving to the user’s Settings file. * Addressed an issue where the user would enter into a game where there would either be no crowd present or the opposing team would not appear on the court. * Fixed an issue where users would get NBA Blacktop rules (no intentional fouls, no 3-in-the-key, etc.) turned on when attempting to play a Quick Game. * In-game saves should now load up correctly in the Playoffs game mode. * Users are now able to assign any jersey number to a player, on any team, when playing outside of The Association game mode. * Games played in the NBA D-League should now have appropriate sized crowds. * Fixed a slowdown issue during stoppages of play with created teams. * Made a change to where the value for headband colors is stored at. These changes can now be made through Living Roster releases once the patch is released. If you see any discrepancies, make sure and let the 2K Insider know! GAMEPLAY: * Tuned shooting percentages across the board, particularly in the paint where more shots are now initiated with contact. * Fixed a soft hang on an inbound where the inbounding player would miss the ball handoff from the referee. * Plays will no longer break when the user strays slightly from the intended path. * Both User/CPU alley-oop success has been toned down such that only realistic attempts should now be completed. * Assists should now only be credited to the passer at appropriate times. * Only 1 timeout is deducted from the total when the CPU calls a timeout for the user. * The CPU should no longer pass the ball to a teammate when the recipient has a foot out of bounds. * Bad passes should be less inaccurate now. They still happen with similar frequency, but some passes can be recovered now. * CPU players now have better logic behind their turbo energy management (which will keep them fresher for key moments in the game). * CPU players should now be more aware of being called for 3 second violations. * Defensive assist is now turned off when the ball is not in play. * The dribbler should no longer teleport back a few feet on the court following a two player steal attempt. * Players with unique free throw stances (ex., Paul Pierce) will no longer slide into position to shoot the free throw. * Point Guards should no longer end up out of bounds during baseline inbounds coming out of a timeout or dead ball. * Fixed a case where the PG would run in a circle (in anticipation of receiving the ball) in the backcourt during transitions. * Players should no longer get stuck in the post in a single player hold-ball animation (often leading to a 24-second violation) when trying to drive to the basket. * Fixed an issue where the user was unable to give certain players their player-specific animation packages. * Fixed an issue with a baseline layup where opposing defenders weren’t able to create contact when the animation played out. * Addressed a specific dunk animation that would sometimes not result in a made basket despite a successful dunk. * The user should now notice more over-the-back calls on rebounds when the boxed out player attempts a rebound. * Improvements to the ‘walk the dog’ inbounds play including increased velocity on the inbound. * A good number of other changes aimed towards increasing user satisfaction have also been made in this release. These will be apparent as you play the game (ex. The referee will now utilize a bounce pass rather than a chest pass when passing the ball to the shooter during free throw situations, plays will now start quicker when the user manually calls a play, etc.). PRESENTATION: * During NBA Today/Association games, the ‘Upcoming Schedule’ overlay will no longer obstruct gameplay. * Fixed an issue where the substitution overlay would sometimes briefly cover the action on the court. * Blank overlays should no longer quickly appear/disappear during gameplay. ONLINE: * Improved performance and stability for all online game types. * Corrected an issue in Team-Up play where all players would sometimes see the same player (PG) listed in all substitution slots. * Ranked game difficulty has been changed to SuperStar for Team-Up games. * Removed the spotlights for online play only to improve performance during stoppages of play. * Corrected an issue with the My Player Pick-Up games that would sometimes cause games to diverge upon initiation. * Fixed an issue where online Association games would diverge at halftime more

Resolved Question: Did Collins program have a reliability improvement program ?

The simple improvement curve was Y =AXB which will produce a straight line on log-log paper where Y is the unit cost (hours/unit or $’s/unit), X is the unit number, A is a theoretical cost of the first unit (hours or $’s) and B is a line slope constant that is related to the rate of improvement [B is literally equal to ln(learning percent)/ln(2) where the learning percent = 100-(rate of improvement)]. For example if the first unit took 100 hours to complete (A=110) and if we had an improvement rate of 20% the learning percentage would be 80%, so that B = ln(1.00-0.20)/ln(2) and B= -0.32193. Thus we would expect production of the 2nd item would require 80 hours and the 4th item produced would require 64 hours, and so forth, as the production quantity doubles we shave 20% from the production time. Some typical learning curve slopes are described at the NASA Cost Estimating Website (NASA 2003) and the learning % varies from a low of 96% for raw materials to a high of 75% for repetitive electrical operations with most values around 80-90%. The plots have three different formats: 1) hours/unit or $/unit versus cumulative production, 2) cumulative (hours or $’s) versus cumulative production, or 3) cumulative average (hours or $’s) versus cumulative production. Learning curves were used extensively by General Electric, and a GE reliability engineer made log-log plots of cumulative MTBF versus cumulative time which gave a straight line for reliability issues (Duane 1964). Duane argued that all failure data should be used on complex electromechanical systems. He recommended the Y-axis should be Y = (cumulative failures)/(cumulative time) = KT-a where the value K is a constant which is dependent upon equipment complexity, design margins, and design objectives for reliability, the value for a » 0.5 with the expectations that some designs would be better (meaning a > 0.5) and some would be less (meaning a < 0.5) and T is cumulative time. Duane drew his conclusions from studying 5 different data sets and found remarkable similarly in patterns for the curves (meaning the line slopes were about the same). Duane also rearranged his equations and showed cumulative failures F = KT(1-a) which allowed forecasting of future failures based on past results. James Duane had a deterministic postulate for monitoring failures and failure rates of a complex system over time using a log-log plot with straight lines. At the US Army Material Systems Analysis Activity during the mid 1970’s Larry Crow converted Duane’s postulate into a mathematical and statistical proof via Weibull statistics in MIL-HDBK-189 (DOD 1981). The military handbook addressed: reliability growth-The positive improvement in a reliability parameter over a period of time due to changes in product design or the manufacturing process., and reliability growth management-The systematic planning for reliability achievement as a function of time and other resources, and controlling the ongoing rate of achievement by reallocation of resources based on comparisons between planned and assessed reliability values. The ultimate goal of the improvement program was to make reliability grow so as to meet the system reliability and performance requirements by managing the development program. The management effort required making reliability: 1) visible, and 2) a manageable characteristic. Reliability growth program required goals and forecast of progress. The failure data usually produced straight line segments on log-log plots with N(t) = ltb where N is the expected number of failures, l is the failure rate at time t = 1, t is cumulative time, and b is the line slope for cumulative failures versus cumulative time (and b = 1 - a from Duane’s equation). Scientific principles determine that failure data fit N(t) = ltb and thus failure data trends can produce a straight line on log-log paper. Data from maintenance failure databases on a log-log plot, will build a Crow/AMSAA relationship for finding the Y-axis intercept at t=1 for l and the slope of the line will define b changes in the programs. Thus future failures can be forecasted and cusps on the data trends will tell if the system is improving (failures are coming more slowly, b<1), deteriorating (failures are coming more quickly, b>1), or if the system is without improvement/deterioration (failures rates are unchanged, b»1). Recently AMSAA has updated the information from Military Handbook MIL-HDBK-189 and produced the AMSAA Reliability Growth Guide TR-652 (DOD 2000). Two excellent documents on the subject of reliability growth are: MIL-HDBK-189, Reliability Growth Management, 13 February 1981 Download from ASSIST Quick Search as a PDF file using the title for the search. This PDF is 8.1 Meg in size. The AMSAA Technical Report No. TR-652 is called the AMSAA Reliability Growth Guide. You can download this September 2000 document as a PDF from this s more

Voting Question: help me please on a problem on elementary statistics thank you?

For the following scenario determine if the numbers that are percentage (%) are statistics or parameters. A company manufactures cardboard containers for packaging frozen fruit juices. The manufacturing process forms the containers by joining cardboard stock to a metal bottom. The container can be inspected to determine if there might be leaks along the cardboard seam or where the metal bottom is attached. It is known from long experience that 18% of cans produced by this process are defective. A random sample of 50 cans was selected from the production process on Monday and it was found that 12% of the selected cans were defective. Because this seemed to indicate an improvement another sample was selected of the same size on Tuesday and in it there were 21% defective cans. The numbers 12%, 18%, 21% are, respectively, a ______ (Pay attention to the order). A. statistic, statistic, parameter. B. parameter, parameter, statistic. C. statistic, statistic, statistic. Resolved Question: Hyper Thyroidism & Liver Problem....?

Hello everyone, here is my story: I have a male cat who is 13 years young and we have just been stationed in Germany. During a routine visit for my cat to get his up to date rabies shot the vet was concerned about his health and wanted to run a blood test. This was a little over a month ago and it showed that he had a high elevation of white blood cells, which then led to the vet finding out that 3 of the 4 part of his liver are elevated in percentages. During the next visit, after the phone call where I learned the information above, the vet found leak-age in his upper left gum by his canine. From there, she put my cat on a high dose of antibiotics and a steroid. (Clindamycin & Millipred--Prednisolone). He was on the steroid for 10 days and the antibiotics for 3 weeks(which he just finished on Tuesday morning). Both these medicines were to help with his liver, high white blood cell count, and the gum problem. On Tuesday, we were at the vet to get another dose of blood work to see if the medicine, either one, has helped him. The blood test was to be run again to check his liver to see if there has been any improvement or not. She also then wanted to check his thyroid. Wednesday morning I got the call back that he has hyper thyroidism; which I was told is some what common in older cats. The vet assistant ran through my options: 1. Surgery to remove the thyroid(which she said is not really done anymore) 2. Radio-active Treatment (which is going to run me 800 euros, which would be roughly $1,000 American) 3. Medication called Methimazole for the rest of his life. Now, my concern is this: I still have yet to have a call back on his liver blood results, and depending on what they are, whether or not I need to get an ultra sound/biopsy done. I was researching the methimazole and it says that it is to be used with extreme caution in cats that have a liver impairment. It also says that it is not recommended for a long period of use. It is temporary until one can get the surgery for the thyroid. I can't afford the surgery for the thryoid or let alone, if his liver needs something done, I can't afford that either. I've already spent more out of my budget to help cure what is partially ailing him now and to figure out what exactly is wrong with him. Does anyone else have similar experiences with this hyper thyroidism? What did you do? I know I'm thinking ahead, because I don't have his liver blood work back yet, but I just sort of want to get all my ducks in order as of right now; I'm also in a tizzy because I don't want to lose him, he's my best friend. Any help or guidance/input is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. The website I went to, to find out about the medication alternative, is: http://www.petplace.com/drug-library/methimazole-tapazole/page1.aspx For those interested. more

Voting Question: Not getting results from exercise?

Some background: I'm a 16 year old male, 5' 9.5", 185 pounds. My body fat percentage, last I calculated it was 25%, 10 points higher than the healthy maximum for my age and gender. My diet, while not great, is certainly better than that of many teens my age who are in shape. Now, I have lived an extremely sedentary lifestyle since I was around 10. When I was 13, I decided to get in shape. I ran 30 minutes a day for two months, no tangible results. When I was 14, I joined the middle school basketball team. Five days a week for 8 weeks, few tangible improvements. I tried weight lifting when I was 15 with a personal trainer, no results. I injured my shoulder two months in, and my body fat percentage stayed exactly the same. So here I am, I have practically given up on exercise, but I want to know what I could have done wrong. In all these workout "attempts" for lack of a better word, I didn't feel better mentally like people said. Often I was very tired, winded, and depressed. Now, I know many of you will first say I have too high of expectations, but I've done my research, and set my standards pretty low for my age. There weren't any signs, however small of improvement. Note: I do have mild exercise induced asthma. more

Resolved Question: Prerequisite skills for teaching Middle School Math topics?

I'm studying for an exam, and I need help with this question! It was on a pretest, so I'm not sure if I got the answers right or wrong, just that my percentage was not as high as it should be. There were actually three questions that referred to this, so I'll ask all three, give the choices, and my answers. Any tips for improvement would be appreciated greatly! (*=answers I chose) 1. What prerequisite skills would a teacher review in order for a student to solve a problem using the Pythagorean Theorem? (multiplication properties, division properties, triangular numbers, *square roots, *variable substitution) 2. Which of the following are prerequisite concepts for completing the area of a parallelogram? (measuring height, perpendicular distance, *area of a rectangle, *sum of angle measures, *congruent triangles, fractions, parallel lines) 3. Which of the following prerequisite skills and concepts should students understand before being introduced to problems in which they divide a decimal number by a decimal number? (*multiplication by 10's and 100's, *simple division, rounding, fractions, *multiplication facts, properties of zero) Thanks again! :) more

Resolved Question: Could anybody tell me by what percentage my heart rate will increase whilst I am using nicotine patches?

I stopped smoking 5 weeks ago and have been using patches to do so. I am currently using 21mg patches although I will be dropping down to 14mg ones in about a week. I am training using a heart rate monitor and have seen some improvements since I started running. So basically I am keen to find out what extra improvement I will see as I get that nasty stuff out of my system. Kind of an extra incentive to spur me on with the quitting and the training. Resolved Question: Octomom costs to date and future?

I just finished watching optimom that i recorded earlier from last week. I kept thinking of the total costs that the taxpayers have absorbed and will continue to pay. My guess is that medicaid picked up the hospitals cost which would have ran close to a million or more due to the time spent in the hospital and ICU to get the babies well enough to take home. Most insurance exclude fertility treatments, and this would have been at least the 7th completed. I shudder to think what could have possess this doctor to keep doing when nadia was unemployed with no visible source of income? She has a new house and a lot of improvements done prior to moving in. Who paid for this house and remodeling? Nannies are not cheap and she stated she had 9 who did daytime and evening care. Even if by some chance in the future she can find a full time job, the cost for child care would be prohibited for the babies and the other 6 children. I am guessing that all the clothes, food, diapers are being donated by baby companies, but at some time, that could stop. The one real blessing is that the children look almost normal, meaning no birth defects or serious medical problems, which if that is true, would be remarkable. I know there is talk of a reality series that will supposedly pay for the children into a trust fund, but its too bad that they cant garnish a percentage as payback for all the free services she has gotten to date. any info or comments? more

Resolved Question: help what should I fix?

Okay I got this homework and i want to know what i need to fix cause it's my first paper for 9th grade my questions was identify and explain the thesis my second question was explain the significance of guns germs and steel also the book if called guns germs and steel Guns, Germs, and Steel •My thought is that Guns, Germs and Steel thesis is that continents developed at different rates because of geographic location, not because of intelligence between people. In addition that led some to get a head start in food production, which in thus also let them get a head start in guns, germs, and steel. •The significance of guns, germs, and steel is greatly because it helped to a great extent civilizations conquer other civilizations that lacked in these. For example the Khoisans of African who were invaded by Bantu farmers. In addition, conquering led to bands getting larger to tribes than to clans than chiefdoms and then states. And with a larger area likes states they have a higher percentage for inventors to appear, they also have more necessities so people made more inventions. Higher populations also tend to have more microbes (Germs) and over time, they acquire a resistance to it, But small hunter and gather tribes who move from place frequently usually weren’t exposed to germs, but when they got in contact with germs they easily died because they had no resistance to it. Like when the Spaniards went to the new world and conquered the Aztecs even though the Spaniards were a mere 125 people and the Aztecs was an empire of thousands of people. Even though the Spaniards were only about 125 they introduced European germs which seemed to be the main cause of the deaths of hundreds of Aztecs since the Aztecs had no resistance to it because they were never exposed to it such as smallpox. •Guns also have had a great impact because guns could easily win in a fight between guns and bows and arrows, even guns and spears. Although swords aren’t better than guns they are a major improvement of the stone weapons that small tribes used, and they were more efficient because they were a lot shaper then stone weapons. Also steel helped a lot because they were able to use it as armor and i'm not talking about grammatical error more

Resolved Question: All success books are based on the bible?

I have a friend who claims all self-help self-improvement and success books are based on the bible... I think this is BS. Right off the bat I can name a couple I know that aren't: The slight edge, King Warrior Magician Lover, Psycho Cybernetics, Think and Grow Rich, The Magic of believing... But what I don't know are the percentage. Those of you here that love success books, do you like, run into one that is based on the bible every 3rd book or something? are half of them? 1%? Any Idea? From what I've seen, It's a small percentage. more

Resolved Question: House/money agreement...?

My boyfriend of 1 year bought a house this spring, back when we were both employed. The house is in his name, he's paying the mortgage and everything, but I loaned him money to buy the house... about 20% of the down payment (he got most of the rest from family members). The money I gave him comes out to be about 3.5% of the purchase price. Luckily it's a three-unit rental, we have some money coming in, so he didn't lose the house when we were both laid off this spring. The situation is that we're both living in the first floor apartment and we're both working to fix up the house. I do a few hours of repair/improvements every day. Until we find jobs, I have no money to help him with rent, and he has no money to pay back my loan for the down payment. We want to work out some kind of fair agreement that we can sign, that would describe how we're managing this money situation, particularly if something unexpected happens (e.g. breakup, sale or loss of house, something happens to bf) so everyone's contributions can be acknowledged fairly on paper. Sort of like a prenup. So, I owe him for "rent," he owes me for the down payment, and he owes me for the work I'm putting in on the house, and we need to figure out how that balances out. Clearly some of these debts cancel each other out. We need to come up with an agreement that resolves (1) how he's repaying my loan, (2) how he's repaying me for my work on the house... also how my work is measured, (3) how I'm repaying him for rent and utilities while I'm living here, and (4) what my stake in the the house is. I'd like a financial stake in the house (percentage of profits) but we can't decide if it should be based on my original monetary contribution and/or on my work to improve/repair the house. We are open to any kind of agreement as long as it's fair. Please give me your ideas! more

Voting Question: Has any woman TTC read this?

Trying to conceive is supposed to be a natural process that is easy, at least, that is what people would lead you to think. Yet, if you have been trying to conceive for many months or even years, you may realize that having children does not come easily for everyone. In fact, each month, a woman has only a twenty to thirty percent chance of conceiving. Most women will conceive within a year of trying but a small percentage of women will still not conceive even after a year of diligently trying. If you have been trying to conceive for any length of time you have probably been given advice from well-meaning or not-so-well-meaning friends or family. You have likely heard the suggestion that you need to relax and stop trying so hard. Maybe you were told something like this “I knew this couple that tried for years to get pregnant and as soon as they stopped trying, they got pregnant”. Or another common statement you might here is a story about someone who finally decided to adopt and then they turned up pregnant. Is there any truth to this? Does trying too hard really cut down your chances of conceiving? There has been much debate about the impact of stress on fertility. Some researchers believe that stress impacts fertility but it is not clear whether the infertility causes the stress or stress causes infertility. There is no question, that fertility issues can put a strain on any relationship. For a couple trying to conceive, the journey often starts out with enthusiasm and optimism. After several cycles of trying, this optimism may soon lead to despair and frustration. Although stress may have an impact on a couple’s fertility it is more likely that stress is the result of infertility not the cause. Most couples will conceive within a year of trying. For couples who do not conceive within a year or two of trying there is almost always a physical cause for their infertility. In fact, 90% of all infertility has an identifiable physical cause. Couples will want to be evaluated by a doctor if they have been trying for over a year and have not had success at conceiving. What about the stories of couples adopting and later becoming pregnant? Does fertility improve when you stop trying? This is simply not true. Although, it is not completely unheard of for a woman to get pregnant after adopting the statistics do not show any improvement in fertility. The percentage of women getting pregnant after adopting is about 5 percent, which is the same as women who have infertility and do not adopt. (source: www.resolve.org) Can you have too much sex? Does trying too hard cut down your chances of getting pregnant? Women only have a short period of time when they are fertile. Having sex frequently during this period of time will increase your chances of getting pregnant. Most experts recommend having sex at least every other day during a woman’s fertile period. It was once suggested that men with low sperm counts abstain from sex prior to ovulation to increase their sperm count. However, recent studies have not shown that abstaining improves sperm count. In fact In men with low sperm counts, the researchers found the volume of semen increased after prolonged abstinence, but the quality got gradually worse the longer the men held back." (source:www.intelihealth.com) The bottom line is that there is no such thing as trying too hard. The difference between a couple that conceives when trying and a couple that does not is not based on how hard they try. Implying that relaxation or not trying increases your chances of getting pregnant, only alienates couples that are trying to conceive and adds to their frustration. Exactly how do you try less when you desperately want a baby? There are no penalties for trying too hard. If you and your partner have been trying to conceive for over a year consult your doctor for fertility treatment options. Trying or not trying hard enough does not cause infertility. more

Resolved Question: Does the Cap and Tax bill give the federal government the right to inspect your home?

Pay close attention to (iii), (iv), and (vi) because those hit you right where you live. What that's saying is the state will be empowered to inspect your home if you want to 1) renovate your house in any way that requires a building permit, 2) sell your house, or 3) change the name of the person responsible for any utility bill. And you thought your home was your ownBuilding inspections are required for structural issues. I just remodeled my kitchen and removed walls. Building inspector was in to make sure it was done right. No problem with that. But to require me to upgrade appliances before I sell a home, not acceptable. Or if I install windows. Not acceptable. more

Resolved Question: Who is better, Kobe or LeBron [Part 1: Simple stats]?

-Info Age = LeBron - 24, Kobe - 31. Height = LeBron - 6-8, Kobe - 6-6. Weight = LeBron - 250, Kobe - 205. Fat = LeBron - 5-7% body fat, Kobe - 8-10% body fat. *** LeBron has some advantage in Speed, Vertical, and overall athleticism. -Scoring PPG = LeBron - 27.5,Kobe - 25.1. No, LeBron is not better than Bryant. Well, I am a LeBron fan, but Kobe scores more points in a given time than LeBron. According to 36 minute stats, LeBron has 24.4 PPG, and Kobe has 24.8PPG. The reason LeBron got more points per game is that he played more minutes (40.6 per game) than Kobe (36.4 per game). FG% = LeBron - 0.471,Kobe - 0.455. Again, Kobe goes the hard way for FG%, because his FGs are mainly jumper - LeBron gets the ball to the rim more (dunks, layups, etc). FT% = LeBron - 0.738,Kobe - 0.840. Well, LeBron was bad in FTs, but he is improving fast. Kobe is very good in free throws. 3PT% = LeBron - 0.328,Kobe - 0.341. This shows you how underrated LeBron's perimeter game is. In fact, LeBrons 3pt percentage in 2008/09 season was exactly the same as Kobe's in 2006/07. Kobe is a decent shooter, and improving but his improvement is not as fast as LeBron. Anyway, Kobe is a better three point shooter. *** Generally, Scoring, while LeBron is more efficient due to other factors, Kobe is more purely skilled than LeBron. -Assist APG = LeBron - 6.7,Kobe - 4.6. *** LeBron is a better passer than Kobe. Kobe had other dominant players (Shaq, Caron Butler, Lamar Odom etc) when he averaged 6 assists per game (career high) - and he averaged 27.6PPG. In his monster scoring season (35.4 PPG), he averaged his least APG when starting (4.5). LeBron had the same 7.2 APG for 3 years having at least 27.2 PPG. In one of them, he had career high 30.0 PPG. And, the other players in his team weren't as good at scoring, and he had a harder time having '1 assist' than Kobe. -Rebound RBG = LeBron - 7.0,Kobe - 5.3. *** This is not something to compare Kobe and LeBron with... I am NOT going to say LeBron is MUCH better because of the position difference - he just contributes to the team more. -Steal STL = LeBron - 1.8,Kobe - 1.5. *** Not that much difference in stats (because Kobe had two years as a reserve). But LeBron is doing better in the recent years. -Block BLK = LeBron - 0.9,Kobe - 0.6. *** This is the same as rebounds. -Turnover TOV = LeBron - 3.3,Kobe - 2.9. *** Kobe has less turnovers than LeBron, one: because LeBron has the ball very often, and two: Kobe doesn't penetrate into the paint as much as LeBron does. Anyway, Kobe has less turnovers than LeBron. LeBron sometimes pisses me off lol. *STAR* plz =)First of all, I said Rebound is not a fair comparison. Second, I used career stats. more

Resolved Question: Are the SATs culturally biased?

A. I just took the SAT last saturday and i would like to point out that it a cognitive ability test; however, basic knowledge, as it pertains to notes in general classes will serve anyone well on the test. B. So how is it culturally biased? - A person of ANY COLOR with ANY amt OF BASIC KNOWLEDGE, will do fine on that test. C. I feel that "cultural bias" is an excuse to let the minorities whom arent scoring as high as some other students, into college - through affirmative action - without them being as smart as the person next to them. Its sick, wrong and disgusting, what is this beneficiary of affirmative action becomes a doctor and gets to operate on people, because the school would be racist to let his underachieving ass go. Most of this information can be found in the book "The Bell Curve" by Harvard Psychologist Richard J. Hernstein whom conducted an in-depth study with American Enterprise Institute political scientist Charles Murray. This study was basically race vs. cognitive ability and what they discovered shook the core of the universe. It answered questions people have been asking for decades, but couldn't ask out loud. But lol the RESULTS which in the book are UN-BIASED as they draw no conlusion but only state statistics - is considered controversial as the results were not as the public had hoped. SOme SAT statistics from the bell curve include- "Chapter 18 is titled "The Leveling of American Education". The authors begin with a look at what test scores say about the changes in student's abilities from the 50's to the present. They present a graph of the composite score of Iowa 9th-graders on the Iowa Test of Basic Skills. The graph shows a steep improvement from the 50's to the 60's, followed by a significant decline until the 70's followed by steady improvement to a new high by the 90's. Graphs of national SAT scores show that these scores remained about the same from the 50's to the 60's and then declined significantly (about 1/2 standard deviation on verbal and 1/3 standard deviation on math) from the 60's to the 80's and then remained about the same from the 80's to the 90's. The authors argue that the familiar explanation which claims that the great decline in SAT scores was caused by the "democratization" during the 60's and 70's is not correct. They point out that the SAT pool expanded dramatically during the 50's and 60's while average scores remained constant. In addition, throughout most of the white SAT score decline the white SAT pool was shrinking, not expanding. They next look at what has happened to the most gifted students. They provide a graph showing the percentage of 17-year olds who scored 700 or higher on the SAT scores. The percentage for math scores decreased from 1970 to 1983 and then increased to their highest ever in 1990. Verbal scores decreased during this first period and remained steady after that. They give the following explanation for the changes illustrated by these graphs. The decline in both the Iowa scores and the SAT scores of the 60's are attributed to what they call the "dumbing down". This period was characterized by simplifying the text books -- fewer difficult words, easier exercises, fewer core requirements, grade inflation etc. They suggest that the "dumbed down" books would actually help the lower end of the spectrum of students and so would account for the increase in overall preparation indicated by the Iowa scores from the 80's to the 90's. The verbal SAT scores did not increase because of the use of the dumbed down books, the increased use of television, and decrease in writing generally, including letter writing. The math SAT scores did not decrease during this period because algebra and calculus are more constant subjects and harder to dumb down. In their discussion of policy implications, they are not very optimistic about new government policies being able to solve general education problems. They point out that surveys have shown most American parents do not support drastic increases in their children's work load and, in fact, that the average American has little incentive to work harder. They argue that educators should return to the idea that one of the chief purposes of education is to educate the gifted and "foster wisdom and virtue through the ideal of the educated man". Chapter 19 is on affirmative action in higher education. The authors present statistics on the differences in SAT score between various groups. Evidently these statistics are more easily obtained from private schools than from public schools. Their first graph shows how the average SAT scores of blacks and Asians differ from whites for entering students at a group of selective schools. The median total SAT score for blacks was 180 points less than for the whites, the median for Asians was 30 points higher than for the whites. The range of difference for blacks went from 95 (Harvard) to 288 (Berkeley). Data for students admitted to medic more

Resolved Question: How does the 68-95-99.7 rule work when your data set is a set of percentages?

I computed a graph for myself (for a self-improvement project). The data set contains percentages and only percentages. So dont let the data percentages and the statistics normal distribution percentages confuse you. My mean score is 97%. My standard deviation is 2%. I figured that I score between 95% and 99% at around 68% of the time. 95% of the time (2 standard deviations), I ought to score between 93% and 101%. And that is where I get annoyed. 101% score. When your 68-95 rule tops out at the max, and there is no upper tail, there is only a 2.5% lower tail... what do you do? How is this interpreted? Is this explained by skewness that I am not aware of? more

Resolved Question: Was my professor unfair to me? Should I continue to fight to see my grade?

Since majority of the students in my history class didn't do very well on the exams (many of them made 50% and below), our professor decides to grade on improvement. She said she'll drop the lowest exam grade and she already curved one of our exams. I did crappy on my first exam, but in the next 2 exams... I got a 90 and 104! She didn't show me my final exam grade. She already turned in our final grades and I got a B. I tried to check my grades in the college website, but it seems that she deleted it all. There's no evidence for ALL the work I've done for that class. My other classes still have grades posted up. I just think it's unfair that she didn't show my final exam grade. I want to see what my real percentage is... it could possibly be an A. Since she cleared out the grades, I think it's harder to show her or the dean what my real grade is. I e-mailed her a while ago, but she didn't reply yet. Should I continue to bug her, or just let it go? more

Resolved Question: What else can I add to this report?

Education Anti-Abortion activist Randall Terry had been arrested while protesting against President Barack Obama who was set to give a commencement speech at the University of Notre Dame just hours after Terry was told to leave school premises. Terry was arrested by campus police on a trespassing charge and later released on a $250 bond. With the United States Economy in crisis many schools, including the Maize School District in the suburbs of Wichita, cancelled feild trips in February for the remainder of the year. Many school systems are even considering laying off teachers, staff and even cutting popular programs. The school board might need to make anywhere from $40 million to $50 million in cuts. Student success is still very unpredictable, and although many students' basic math and reading skills have improved over the past 30 to 40 years, there have been no new improvements within the last 4 years, many percentages staying at a flat rate. The low-achieving students have been making more of an upturn compared to the high-achieving students who haven't made much of a growth. With new technology being invented everyday, the new electronics are bound to follow us to places in our everyday life, even in school. High school teams and their robots have start competing during the regional FIRST Robotics competition at San Diego Sports Arena in March. Days after the San Diego competiton more then 10,000 students gathered in Atlanta's Georgia Dome to join in another Robotics competition. This is just an example on how technology is becoming more firmiliar in our lifestyles. In schools across the United States teachers and other staff alike are getting ready for the first payments under the federal economic stimulus. This for the next 2 years, increases the federal government's share in funding public schools, helping to save the jobs of thousands of teachers. This is said to transform public education in America. The Michigan Department of Community Health has suggested that schools are children's day cares shut down for one straight week if they have any confirmed cases of the swine flu. They also suggest that siblings of confirmed or likely cases of swine flu should remain isolated at home during this same time period. People are encouraged to avoid going into crowds as well. http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-teachers6-2009may06,0,3038809.story http://www.denverpost.com/ci_12303234 http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/09125/967654-28.stm http://blog.cleveland.com/metro/2009/05/case_western_reserve_universit_4.html more
