Patient Questions and Answers

Open Question: INTRAVITREAL ANTI-VEGF INJECTION?

Hi, having eye problems caused by diabetes and the consultant has suggested that the above treatment could help. The thought of an injection into the eyeball is a little disturbing to say the least. He never explained the procedure fully and I have visions of someone approaching with a needle and although I am aware that the eye is anesthetized is the patient aware of the approaching needle. Sounds a bit wimpish on my part but it is a worry. Any relevant information would be appreciated, Thanks more

Open Question: I feel like a spoiled little brat?

Well I'm a 15 year old guy and very much addicted to gadgets. I got a phone 2 years ago and last year I asked for the S3 when it came out. Our family was sort of in a financial crisis last year so when my dad said no I just said "don't worry dad, just get it for me when you can already." I didn't get anything for Christmas either (didn't ask because of the situation) , and then yesterday my dad gave me a S4 and headphones I've always wanted plus a lot of shirts. And he said "this is for being patient and complaining when you couldn't get the things you wanted" I feel like this is a bit too much, help? more

Open Question: Was this HIV test performed correctly?

Is anyone familiar with, or have been tested for HIV using, the INSTI rapid antibody test? I was tested negative using this test kit, and being well past the window period, my result should be conclusive and reliable BUT I have one concern. I've read that finger stick blood used to test for things like glucose, cholesterol, lead etc might yield inaccurate results if the health professional performing the test doesn't wipe off the first drop of blood. This is because the first drop might be contaminated with tissue fluid. I'm not sure if this also applies to HIV testing, though. The INSTI test kit insert leaflet didn't say that it was necessary to wipe off the first drop of blood from the patient's finger. But the results from their clinical trials are interesting because of 22 HIV-positive people who gave finger stick blood, venipuncture blood and plasma, only one person got a false-negative and this happened with the finger stick blood. Can anyone with medical knowledge tell me whether blood that might be contaminated with tissue fluid will or won't contain enough HIV antibodies to be detected by a test kit, assuming the person is positive? Also, has anyone used this INSTI test here? I know it's very popular. When you got tested, did the nurse start collecting your blood right from the first drop or did he/she wipe off a bit first? 10 points for a good answer. :) more

I was recently in hospital, nurses taking vital stats every hour, going with the blood pressure trolley from patient to patient, the blood pressure cuff and finger clip to measure respiration are not disinfected between patients. more

Open Question: Where can I buy the American Express Jumper???!!?

My uncle who works in a hospital was given a jumper as a gift from a patient. When I went to his house, I tried it on and it turned out to suit me really well, but my uncle won't let me keep it because he likes it himself, so I tried to find it online, but can't find it anywhere (not even on google images) and I really want it. It is a grey jumper with a black square in the very middle, with the words 'American express' on it. If anyone knows where to get this from, please tell me. Even if it isn't grey or doesn't say American express in the place my uncle's one says it, please tell me where I can buy it from. Whoever directs me to it will have their answer chosen as best answer and will get a 5* rating. Thank you in advance. more

Open Question: Scream 5 ideas are lacking originality?

Okay so all of these Scream 5 ideas are putting me to sleep. I know people are praying for yet another sequel and some just wanted the series to end at 3 but the new generation deserve something new especially because Scream 4 gave us the vibe of a whole new chapter. This Scream TV series is a good idea also but I don't want to focus or generally go into it. So all of the opening sequences leave you exhausted with boredom. "Stacy, Claire and Molly get stabbed when Ghostface kills them. Kirby is alive and Sidney helps her to live and she becomes the new final girl." BORING. It has been done. I do admit it is a very hard to think of an original sequel after making four related films. But can we at least go different in some ways with taking some risks? How about we get rid of Woodsboro? Aren't you sick that every film either was based in Woodsboro or mentioned and dwelled on Woodsboro. We need a fresh start. A new place. How about a more rural place where everyone hates eachother and make their hate feel like a sense of a volcano erupting. Personally, I believe Sidney should be in prison. The killer wants the new franchise to eliminate the classic people and get fresh blood. Maybe the killer as part of a new chapter wanted a new final girl and was a mental patient, getting treatment from Kate Roberts who had an interest in treatment and caring for people after a horrific experience revealed by the end of Part 5? Maybe Kate and Maureen had a fight and something happened to both of them after an incident or event. Olivia Morris mentioned her 'mom and boyfriend' in Scream 4. What happened to her parents relationship? Was the dad, the mental patient? Maybe a child from the quiet rural place who snapped because Jill used to bully her and Kate did nothing so the now College student girl flipped and instead of fame, she wanted to destroy the franchise and the lives of all innocence who grew up near her? Who knows? Maybe there's 4 killers. Dewey dies early+divorced more

Feel like a failure like I'm a shit girlfriend that My boyfriend is or will get bored with me. Feel bad that I'm so shit with money. Feel jealous because my mate has got a house with her bf after a year of being with him. 3 years ive been with mine- no sign of it happening any time soon. Feel like a nasty person. Feel stupid and socially inept. Feel like I don't fit it and don't belong. Feel bad because I'm in a position loads of people would love to be in and I'm still not happy and confident. Feel ugly and fat and disgusting. Feel like I wish I was more than what I am and doing more than what I'm doing. I wish I had more time. I wish I was a nicer tolerant and more patient person. Basically having a bad day- any positive vibes would be amazing xxx more

Open Question: Should I fire this guy?

I have an employee who was really helpful and patient with me in The beginning. I decided to hire him full time because of that. He suggested a female friend if his to work for me As he trusts someone he knows more. That friend turned out to be girlfriend on his Facebook so he lied to me. I told him I had difficulty sleeping because of a time change adjustment (I came from an American trip) the next day he gave me a pill of oxytocin but accidentally pulled out oxycodone as well. He also took a small wagon from office to do his moving with without Asking me. The wagon is cheap and I don't mind lending it but I wasn't asked. I never fired somebody and think I have to. Any tips? more

Resolved Question: Police Conduct - Refusal of Hospital Treatment?

I want to first admit that my behaviour at the beginning of this event was uncalled for, as I appreciate the ambulance staff and what they do so please answer sensibly. The outcome of the following story is: I accepted a Caution but it is bugging me now. I got a bit too drunk at the weekend and someone had called an ambulance to attend. I was found unconscious at the scene but was woken by paramedics. I was dragged in to an ambulance where I became aggressive and refused treatment. The police were then called and I was injured upon being arrested and taken to hospital. I told the police I did not want hospital treatment, as it is my right to refuse treatment. I was then forced to have the treatment and therefore I shouted abusive insults at the police and stated my rights to refuse treatment. I tried to stand up in the room I was in and walk out saying that medical treatment could not be forced on me. I was kicked to the ground by the police officer and restrained and cuffed. I was put on the bed where I tried to stand up and was forced back down to the bed and in the process the police officer injured her wrist (I still do not believe to be the case). I was taken to the station in the morning and they were going to charge me with assault and public order offences. Am I correct in thinking that I was mistreated by having my rights taken away and being forced to be given treatment and detained in a place that I had not consented to, therefore making the offences not count? I do not understand how the police can force it against my consent even though I kept refusing over and over again. They then said I was breaking the law by standing up for myself basically. The outcome of which I now have a caution, which would have been a conviction had they progressed but still feel this is unjust. If the police are there to help people who do stupid things like I did then why deliberately harm the detainee? The police in the station in the morning were the nicest people.. The solicitor did not discuss this avenue but the more I think about it the more I feel they broke the rules? I feelThanks for the replies, so it was a good move to accept the Caution as it seems like I didn't have much of a defence?I agree with the concept but in this case I was literally treated like a dog and am pretty battered from the ordeal. I've never had such a bad experience with the police and I feel like I was on the receiving end of police who abuse their power.I posed this question as a real question not an opportunity to provide biased and judgmental answers. You have no idea how I acted, or how the police acted in this case. I stated above that I wasn't 'cared' for by the police. They took me to the hospital because they had caused harm to me. I was kicked to the floor for wanting to stand up, can't see how this is acceptable. I have cut wrists, bruised legs, cut up face, potential nerve damage in my arm..none of which were there before arrest..definitely not acceptable force but of course I have no proof accept my word. For your information I did apologise so need to get on your high horse. I was watching videos last night of police abusing their power and it was a similar situation, the majority of police are good, but not all. Also as repeated before I stated how nice the station staff were which again shows I do not have a problem with police. The only people I feel the need to apologise to are the hospital and ambulanc more

Open Question: How can I include this in my CV?

I am applying for summer jobs in shops and basically I have no experience in that sort of area. The only experience I have is in voluntary work through visiting patients in hospitals, helping children with special needs and helping look after the elderly in daycare centres. Therefore, I am trying to turn this experience around to make it look like I have gained skills for a job in retail. For example, this experience has given me good people skills which will help me to provide good customer service. How can I say on my CV that I have visited patients in hospital who are lonely and who don't get visitors can help cheer them up? I'm finding it difficult to say things in a professional way that will make my experience look beneficial. Thanks for any help. more

Open Question: Can a doctor check my tesosterone levels?

I am going to my doctor about my ear (it is all blocked up, like when you get water in it from swimming however it has been like this for 3 days and I haven't been swimming). When I am there, I want to also ask him about my foot because whenever I walk around the house at home, I hear a clicking noise in both my feet underneath my toes. It is not painful, but it happens every few steps I take and it is quite loud, my mom is worried and has been happening for years. Since I'm also starting bodybuilding, I was wondering if my doctor could check my testosterone levels (and free testosterone levels). I am not sure if he will do this because I am only doing it because I am interested in the results and am more just curious to find out. But I don't have anything wrong (as far as i know) with my testosterone levels, so it is not urgent and I think he may say 'no' he has other stuff to do/deal with from other patients which are more important and I would be wasting his time. Plus I'm only 19. more

Open Question: Hair Loss Due to Stress?

I'm 17 and about a year ago came out of a pretty intense period of depression lasting two years. Since then there is some just noticeable thinning all around the front of my hair line, the most effected area being right in the middle. Until now I have thought that specific time in my life was to blame for this. I have absolutely no facial or body hair excluding pubic and a pretty low sex drive, so I've always figured that my Testosterone and DHT levels must be relatively low, and up until now have always had pretty thick hair so I hadn't thought that my genes were the problem. My hair hasn't gotten any thinner since coming out of that stage of depression. Does it sound like I have anything to worry about or should I just be more patient? (I know I've asked this before, but I really want to see if I can get some more useful information.) PS, I've heard of products like Regaine and seen that for those who are more predisposed to suffer hair loss who take Regaine have to continue treatment as long as they want it's effect, could I temporarily take on this treatment just to regrow what little I've lost and then cease treatment? Now that I'm no longer suffering from depression maybe all my hair needs is a little push? Once again, many thanks. more

Open Question: Does this sound like an original story plot?

Two twin sisters, Cade and Noor Delvecchio, are fed up with their jobs. Cade is a mascot for a pretty bad football team, and thinks her talent is wasted. Noor is a doctor in A&E, and was enjoying herself, until a patient's family member sued her. Cade and Noor decide to swap lives for a few days, but it doesn't work out, and their covers get blown. A few months later, Noor found a note buried in a drawer. She reads it, and it is from her mother. It says that one of the twins is a reflection of the other, but it doesn't say which one. They have to work out for themselves. I'm putting this on Wattpad if you think it's good enough, so I'm not telling you which twin it is. So, what could I add, remove, or change. Or should I just scrap the whole story?I'm not stupid, I know what will happen when Cade is a doctor. She has to go into surgery, but bails out before so they get another doctor to do it.And I know you can't make a living being a mascot, but this is a story! The same applies to the reflection thing.Oh, by the way, the twin that is a reflection doesn't know that she is. more

Resolved Question: My Girlfriends past - Should I forgive her? if so, how do I?

Hi All long post so please be patient. I'm having some serious issues with my current girlfriend of only 2 months and it all relates to past experiences i'm 23 she is 20. I am usually okay with the past if they were before me but in this case she knew i existed and we had some history... i'll explain. I met her when she was on holiday in my country and we met by chance and hit it off straight away and she came back to my house that night and we had sex. This was the first time in her life she had ever had a one night stand and i was only her third ever guy (she was 19 at the time). we hung out the next day and had really nice time and when she left i said lets keep in touch. A few weeks later she flew back over to come stay with me for a few days as we had kept in touch and started to like each other. We had an amazing time and its hard to forget how happy we both were. I knew all along that in a few weeks time she would be flying away to Cape Town for 7 months to study and see her old friends over there (she went over at 16 too). It was a sad farewell but at this point we had developed feelings but thought it best that we stay single and not exclusive even though in the back of our minds we wanted it (This will come back to haunt me). she had been in Cape Town for 2 months and we had been in touch the whole time and i even spoke about flying over to see her but flights were too expensive. I found out later on that she had started hooking up with a 'friend' on a regular basis for about 4 weeks. I know details too... they would regularly hang at each others houses and do oral and kiss etc.. and only had sex once. She told me after this had happened via text that she cried after they had sex because she likes me and regrets it. I also found out that they went back to hooking up maybe one more time after that time. I said at the time look 'its not the best news in the world to hear but i want you to be happy and i don't want to be this guy 1000miles away stopping you enjoying yourself' (i also regret this). we had a fight over text and she said she will stop and she did after four weeks. We kept in touch and briefly spoke about whether we should be exclusive from now on - i said i would do it she wanted to which apparently wasn't enough confirmation and she wrote me saying she might hook up with someone if she wants to. I know that a couple of weeks after this she slept with another guy once only. So she had been in Cape Town four months and already slept with two guys and done more with one other. Bare in mind she has only slept with 5 guys ever including me. After this she was there for another 2 and a half months and didn't even kiss anyone else because she still felt like she liked me. I'm not saying i was a saint 7 months either i had a couple of one night stands and started hooking up with one girl for about 4 weeks also. SO the times comes around and she is nearing the end of her stay there and we are on really open talking terms i knew about her experiences and she knew about mine and we toyed with the idea of meeting up again once she was home in Germany. We did and we hit it off straight away again and really fell for one another. Since that holiday we committed to each other and travel back and forth between the UK and Germany regularly and i would say we are madly in love. SO i'm sat here today 2 months into our relationship talking about our pasts again and now it hurts a lot more that it happened she tells me she didn't enjoy it or have feelings for those guys and i said the same about my experiences and its true! We have been arguing that what each other did is wrong and we both regret it. She has since forgiven me but if i'm honest i'm finding it hard letting go knowing that we kept in touch the whole time through it and she was fucking around with other guys. It has really depressed me and i'm living in the past regretting not saying lets be exclusive and that i could've flown over to Cape Town and all this would be avoidable. I really hope i get over this because at first we were so close and everyone says we suit so well. And she is a great person. I'm finding hard looking at her knowing what she's done it seems totally out of character and i don't understand why carried on with the first guy if she didn't enjoy it. I know there is a double standard here and i'm not perfect either. Should i forgive her? if so how do i accept it and move on. I keep getting sick images in my head of her with those guys and it haunts me. I would be able to forget this much easier if she knew i didnt exist but because we had shared something before it makes it so difficult to let go. PLEASE i do need honest advise, i wish i could be like 'whatever i don't care about the sex stuff' but im finding it super difficult. What should i do and am i wrong to care about this? I more

Resolved Question: How to not come across as abrupt? Im student nurse on placement?

Hello. Im on placement in a very busy and fast paced hospital department. Ive had this before where ive been told im apparantly im coming across as abrupt when asking doctors to do things like signing patient medical notes and making entries. Ive really tried to be as curteous as possible but after so many weeks im getting it again and im not sure who is making the criticism- the nurses or the doctors. I always say please and thankyou and speak very politely. This is because im being very conscientious and aim to be professional. Im really getting fed up though as its starting to sound rather petty. I am a student and i dont have time to faff about on a busy department. In my opinion ive been polite and to the point so people know exactly what im asking them to do and to not take too long with asking doctors to do things. I really need help now with this. Its getting me down. :/ more

Open Question: Should I leave my partner after 6 years?

I’ve been with my partner for 6 years and we have a 2yr 10 months and 10 months children together. I have been suffering from post-natal depression but I think the main problem now is more how he doesn’t help as much as he should and even when the kids are in bed im cooking his dinner and cleaning ect.. when I also work part time. I’ve been at the point for a while where im not sure if I want to be together anymore, more often than not im thinking of splitting up even to the point where ive thought of the days he can have the children and finances. I think I would be lonely at times but also happier as well. I’ve tried talking to him about helping and he turns everything back at me and then moans everyday that I’m not keeping up with all the house chores ect.. I’m worried about the environment the kids would stay in when with him if we did spilt and id rather him have them at his parents, he’s a good dad most of the time but not good at getting up or as patient as he could be. He can also be quite nasty and says he’ll tell people about our private life and has pics ect.. if I ever leave him. Serious answers please more

As a matter of fact, I've farted at least 10 times since I've been here, and I bet you didn't even notice!" The doctor says, "I see. Take these pills and come back next week." The next week the old lady returns. "Doctor," she says, "I don't know what the hell you gave me, but now my silent farts stink like the dickens." The doctor says, "Good! Now that we've cleared up your sinuses, let's work on your hearing." more

Open Question: UK: family contacts in case of emergency?

My housemates and I were watching an A&E documentary and we saw how they struggled to track down emergency contacts on the patients' mobile phones. I've always had my mobile contacts in alphabetical order but with Aa mum, Aa boyfriend and Aa friend (names not included!), because I assumed they would scroll from the top of the alphabetical list down. One of my housemates however has said that apparently you're supposed to put ICOE (in case of emergency) and then the name? But I can't find really find anything official to back this up. I would be curious to know if there are any A&E/ambulance/paramedic workers out there that could tell me what they would look for in this situation? Thank you! more

Open Question: parents, do you say this sort of thing to your kids?

hi im 15 and a girl. I never really realized until i had my friend at my house the other day that what my mom says isnt like how every parent is. me and my friend and my brother was playing, but my brother(who is 10 and i love him sooo much) was in a bitchy mood. so I was being patient and playful with him until he went to break the wire on my MP3 player, and I jokingly pulled his hair. Dont think im a bitch I pull his hair playfully all the time its a joke and he does it back or gives me a nuggie (rubs his fist on my head) but this time he went off crying. I tried to say sorry but he went to my mom. my mom glared at me and said "What the F--- is wrong with you?" I started panicking and saying "It was an accident, I didnt mean to hurt him, he was going to break my wire" and she got really mad infront of my friend, she was saying "Your a waste of space" "you dont do anything" "Your a waste of 15 years" "I hope one day he (my brother) gets older and beats you up" and my friend did something i didnt expect and took my hand like she felt bad for me. for the last few days her mom has been treating me like her extra kid, she sends her daughter with treats in her lunchbox for me like choclate buttons and stuff. Its because my friend told her mom and i dont mind that, but i never thought it was that much of a big deal. I thought all or most parents are like that. is her mom just a different kind of parent to my mom? also do you say stuff like that to your kids, even if your just angry? x thanks xxthankyou so much for answering, i thought everyone would think im a spotlit brat. I am 15 years old and yeah, this happens often, but not infront of my friend. and i feel more sorry for my friend than myself because she had to sit there in that awkward situation xi really dont do this sort of thing often, cause i have accidentally hurt him before and he has me before but we say sorry and its always okay. this time i didnt hurt him his hair got caught in my ring and he was in a mood anyway.also, im more interested in when she said "I hope he beats you up when your older" because that upset me the most in all of what she said. more
