Diy Improvement Questions and Answers

Resolved Question: Does anyone else find that apple's standard headphones are awful?

I'm very annoyed with these. They barely fit in my ears and the volume is louder when they are loosely in my ears than when they are tightly in! Anyone else hate these? Any DIY improvements? more

Resolved Question: UK Government Grants?

Does anyone know if UK Government hand out grants for home improvements such as installation of new kitchens etc? I do not mean DIY - I mean professional work by a builder or kitchen installation company. Thanks more

Resolved Question: Where can I find DIY videos on home improvement projects?

I'm looking for some good, detailed instructional videos on home improvement projects, such as electrical, plumbing, ceramic tile, and drywall. I have experience with electrical, so I bought the electrical DVD from the Home Depot to check it out. I didn't learn a thing from it! They show only a few very simple things (replacing switches, outlets, fixtures) that any idiot should be able to do. They didn't show how to run wire, make connections, tap into an existing circuit, or anything. Are the rest of the Home Depot videos on other trades the same way? Or are there better ones out there? My dad has a VHS electrical video from 1987, and I learned a lot more from that when I watched it a few years ago than I did with the new one from HD. more

Resolved Question: Anyone know a Good geeky DIY site?

I get very bored on the weekend and need something to do and I love to take things apart and make something out of them. So I was wondering if anyone knows a good DIY site that gives ideas for making things. I'm not really interested in "home improvement" but more "wow thats awesome and useless" if you know what I mean. Thanks for the help! more

Resolved Question: Replacing old tiles with new countertops?

Hello. Newbie to DIY home improvements, hehe, advise needed. The kitchen is currently all tiled up (the work table, sink area) It is unpleasant to see the stains, dirt, slime building up on the grout, and they can't be removed thoroughly despite tedious cleaning. And the tiles being 6x6 inchers there's a lot of unsightly grout seen. We'd like to replace it with either a laminate counter top or stone (but leaning on laminate to cut on costs) for sanitation & maintenance reasons and for aesthetics . My questions: 1. Is it possible to not remove the tiles when putting in the new counter top? Height-wise, the added inch or so won't be a problem. 2. Stone tops- they say if you get low grade ones, it's prone to staining etc.. well, we want a black counter top so does it even matter? lol am i being to simplistic about this? It is dark black, so staining would be at best unnoticeable? Thanks!@ fraz- The front tiles (4" height) and its base cement will be removed. So we're just covering one long rectangular top that has walls on 3 of its sides. So that's basic already-- meaning we don't have it customized anymore? @deren - we're trying to stay away from tiles because when you chop on top of it, it can crack, right? but for the backsplash, great tip. The grout will be black to be inconspicuous.. can the spacing be less than1/8"? Like 1/16"?@chicagirl, yes, I meant chopping with a board. I've never done that with the (current) tiles either, worrying the impact might crack it or something. And I've never put anything hot directly-- I have that melamin?silicone? mat, because I'm not sure if tiles can take high heat. The black grout suggested, yes, I'll be using that for the backsplash. @TUDT, yeah, removing everything would be best, but everyone wants this to be finished the fastest time and cleanest way possible without having to remove/clean everything in the area if we chip the old tiles off. Affirmative on moisture on the underside. The stubborn muck comes from food prep, water drips from pans, etc daily use. It's dry below. more

Resolved Question: Which home improvement businesses are in South Africa?

Resolved Question: What would it take to have my own home improvement show on HGTV or DIY?

I'm 15 now, but when I get older, I would like to host my own home improvement show. It would be entirely for electrical work, which is something I hardly ever see described in detail on the channel. In the first episode, I would show simple stuff like replacing switches, outlets, and fixtures. In later episodes, I would show how to add new circuits to the breaker panel. In a late episode, I would actually take the viewers from start to finish in doing a complete service panel upgrade (from 60A meter and fuse box to 100A meter and circuit breaker panel). I've never seen anything like that on TV before. I'm only 15, but I've done all these things myself on my own house, so I'm competent in the trade. I would like to be an electrician when I grow up. more

Resolved Question: Can (or, Should) hardboard be used as cheap wall paneling?

Just moved into a new apartment that's in pretty rough shape. The thin wall panels are split in some places, deteriorating at the bottom (water damage?), and have a real shoddy paint job. So, we want to replace them. The landlord will not be paying for any improvements. Given that we're not interested in investing much in a rental, but are very interested in making it tolerably livable, I've been checking out my options. Hardboard wall panels (like these sold at Lowes http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=15486-46498-SS2204825&lpage=none ) seem to be cheapest option. Other options: replacement wall paneling sheets (the thin fake wood stuff), DIY drywall (no experience with this but willing to learn). More info: the walls most in need of help are along the stairs. Any advice on using hardboard as wall paneling? It seems like we could paint the hardboard if we put liner paper over it. Other suggestions of cheap, DIY wall alternatives would be much appreciated. more

Resolved Question: DIY Self-Improvement Subliminal Messaging?

Hey folks, I've got a fraternity-sized keg of woes and issues to tackle, and I'm wondering about some good ways to do self-affirming mental tricks without spending any money. How might I create a system of subliminal messages to help myself along for free and without buying any of those CDs or videos or whatever? more

Resolved Question: how does Concrete stick things together?

I watch a lot of home improvement shows, i.e. This Old House, DIY Network, Bob Villa, Etc. and so on. I know when you pour a slab of Concrete it hardens and becomes very stiff. But how does concrete stick things together like Bricks, Stone, Tile etc. I mean it not sticky, it seems (to me) to be too large to seep into the pores of the material your trying to bond. So how does Concrete Stick things together? more

Resolved Question: Does this sound good for my husband for Christmas?

My husband's birthday is right before Christmas. Birthday: Subscription to a Wine magazine. Wine bottle stopper. Wine tour and tasting for the two of us to go on. Christmas: Magazine for Home Workshop- it's a home reno/ diy magazine. Screwdriver set Gift certificate for Home Depot Cell phone holder for tool belt Stocking: fishing tackle golf tees Nail driver thingy- whatever that is but it was recommended already. :P What else? What else should I get him? He obviously really likes golfing, fishing, and he's gone nutty over woodworking and home improvements. :P I have about $200.00 to spend, but I don't necessarily want to spend it all on a big item, you know? Thanks!!!! ~~ more

Resolved Question: DIY home insulation (loose fiber in walls) - recommended?

In a home improvement how-to book that I own, I was surprised to see instructions on how to insulate your home's walls by yourself. I am talking about loose fiber, not foam, which is blown in with blowers you can rent from stores like the Home Depot. Is this something that a handy homeowner can do themselves, provided they have the proper equipment, have taken the necessary steps beforehand and are well-versed in how to use the blower? It's thousands of dollars less to do this yourself than to hire a company to do it for you, so it's got me very curious. more

Voting Question: How difficult is it to be your own general contractor for home improvement projects?

For example, I was thinking if you need plumbing, call in a plumber and say "tell me where you need to get at for what I want done and I will tear away the walls and floors for you". Same thing with electrical. Could I just say to an electrician "just tell me where you need to get at and I will open it up for you"? In terms of walls, everybody can put up drywall to patch up open spaces. In terms of framing, a DIY book should do just fine, right? My point is, just as long as you do your homework while still letting licensed people do plumbing and electrical, you should be able to save big bucks, right? more

Voting Question: Help with chemically-straightened hair maintenance, please.?

I got my hair professionally, chemically straightened today so I'm very pleased with the result. Right now, the ends are slightly dry, but I expected that since I used to straighten my hair on a daily basis. I want to maintain my straight hair for as long as possible (the roots/top of my hair has always been straight, so I'm not worrying about the roots growing back), so I'm looking for advice. There's a lot that shows up when I Google it, but here's what I plan on doing after the 3-day period to keep my hair as healthy as possible, any evaluation and improvements are highly appreciated! - Thoroughly shampoo/condition hair every 3 days (too much?) and condition between washings (I'm thinking every other day). Product recommendations are appreciated. - Not sure about this: my aunt told me that if I wanted to maintain it for as long as possible, I should blow dry it straight? I'm leaning towards not using the blow-dryer, but I'm not sure. Is there any chance that it'll go back to being wavy if I leave it wet? This is my first time doing anything to my hair, so I'm unsure how well the straight-ness is going to stay. - Deep condition using DIY hair masks once a week. (If anyone has any good recommendations for purchased OR homemade deep conditioners, that'd be nice) Right now, I'm thinking mayonnaise since I can't get my hands on olive oil or avocado right now. And also, I'm assuming that I'm going to wake up with some wave in the morning (sleep advice? haha) so.. anyway to fix this? My hair stylist told me to wet the hair and blow-dry it straight, but I have to wait 3 days until I can get it wet. Any help is loved! (: more

Resolved Question: Why is my skin so dry after a bikini wax?

Three days ago I gave myself a bikini wax using one of those DIY waxing kits. After the wax, parts of skin is very dry and almost scale-y like. I have put some creams on it after but there have been no improvements. I have had a few waxes done on my own before but they have always been fine, no dry skin. I am wondering why my skin is so dry and if there are any recommended creams that could help with this problem. Thanks! :) more

Resolved Question: Pure Acetone for Acrylics vs. Pure Acetone for DIY purpose? Same stuff? Not the same?

I do my own acrylic nails and stuff (and toenail nail art with acrylic resin glues), and I need to find something to remove them more efficiently - especially something to remove nailpolish with glitter embedded in it. Usually I use the "pure" acetone from NSI, however, someone told me that it's actually the same stuff you can buy in big 1ltr cans from DIY and home improvement stores (just bottled instead and with a higher price tag) - just wondering if it is, or is there any particular difference. Perhaps a nail tech can answer for me. I know it's dangerous stuff (I wear a mask when I use mine), but the nail designs I do on my natural nails never come off with the nail-polish removers from stores - they're not as strong. Advice?According to my bottle from NSI it just lists "100% pure acetone" as the ingredients. As for the other stuff, they say 98.5% which would be close enough I guess? I have tried soaking the nails and holding the wipe down soaked with the stuff before wiping but it can still be pretty tricky getting it off. It's just also quicker with pure acetone than generic crappy stuff from the store. more

Resolved Question: I have some DIY home improvement construction debris. How should I get rid of it?

I've got some destroyed cabinets, an old door, some pipes, some scrap lumber, and some scrap plywood. This is all the result of a few home improvement projects. It's all too big to fit in my normal trash can. My trash company won't pick up anything that isn't in their trash can. I called a dumpster service, and they will drop off a dumpster for $80. A trash hauler will come by for $120. I was hoping for something a lot cheaper. Any ideas? Thanks for the replies so far. Some more details: - I live in a beach town in Los Angeles county. The houses are very close to each other and yards are very small. So burning is not possible in my area. - I looked into driving my trash to the dump myself. LA is a big place, and the only public "dump" I could find was 40 miles away. And they charge by the pound. And I don't have a pickup or trailer. So after renting a pickup or trailer, then driving 40 miles, and paying to drop it off, this would be a huge hassle and expense. Right now, renting a dumpster is looking like the best option. Or finding a community dumpster (even if it isn't my community!) and tossing this stuff in. more

Resolved Question: How can I learn to entertain myself without my boyfriend?

I've never been the type of person to be passionate about a hobby. I actually don't really have any hobbies--unless you count mindless activities like browsing Yahoo Answers ;). My boyfriend (who I live with) recently bought a house and, since he's into DIY projects, he likes spending his spare time working on improving the house. I love spending time with him and so what I like to do in my spare time is hang out with him. I know he's started to get really annoyed with me because he wants to do his projects and I get bored waiting for him to get done. Also I feel really guilty watching him work so hard and loving it while I'm either doing nothing or forcing myself to do housework just for the sake of being productive. What are some things I could do to keep myself occupied and happy for hours at a time while he's doing his own thing? I don't really have an interest in anything or any useful skills that I could make use of. I know I've got to learn to be happy without my boyfriend, though, or he'll stop being happy with me. Any ideas, from a craft to a home-improvement task that an unskilled person could handle or whatever, would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! P.S. I'm not putting this in a category like Hobbies and Crafts because A. it'll get more attention here and B. this question has more to do with us being happy in our relationship than it has to do with crotcheting. And it's going in Marriage and Divorce instead of Singles and Dating since our relationship is basically like a married one in everything but the name. more

Resolved Question: Hello people, My name is Alex, I come from Germany and need any helps in revision of my home work.?

Hello people, My name is Alex, I come from Germany and need any helps in revision of my home work. I learn English and have to make a home work for morning. As I have a lot of problems with English grammar I would appreciate if anybody can do a correction of my text. And here is it: THANKS A LOT IN ADVANCE: File F Writing Practice Write a letter from Glen Christian to the First National Bank of Delaware after the meeting on 15. February. State what progress has been made in fulfilling their conditions for new loan and how you intend to tackle what remains. Don’t forget that you need the money urgently. Dear Sir or Madam, Hereby I would like to inform you on behalf of the Management Team of Elliott Industries, that the most points of the condition precedent have been already fulfilled. To give you a more exact picture about the current situation in the buyout running, I would like to point out the following positions with the indicated progress reports: Pos.1.0_Improvement of the current finance situation Progress report: The finance management has been strengthened by the appointment of a new Finance Director. Pos:2.0_Reducing of negative costs Progress report: Part of the DIY Division has been sold and the remainder wound up for a book loss of ₤350000,- Pos.3.0_Comprehensive data processing and management information system Progress report: The new data processing system is being installed but not fully operational. The vital stock control program will be operational in two weeks time. Pos.4.0_Alternative source for the key raw material Progress report: Rudge Pressings Ltd. is ready to go on the market and an offer must be made soon. As you can see, the improvement process defined under position one’Pos.1.0’ and two ’Pos.2.0’ have been done completely. At the present situation we are concentrating on Pos.3.0 and Pos.4.0, because these items are currently open yet. To save more precious time during the establishment of new data processing information system we decided to implement a new system in stages. This could give us a good opportunity to have a short reaction ways in the fall the system will work wrong. Therefore we created a time table for the project called “Implementation of data processing information system in stages”, which I enclosed to this letter. In relation to Pos.4.0 of condition precedent we need urgently your finance intervention. In effort to provide our company with an assured supply of the key raw materials and to create a financially sound grouping we certainly have to go ahead towards acquisition of the Rudge Pressings Ltd. Therefore I would like to ask you to give urgent attention to arranging the bank loan, as Rudge Pressings Ltd. is already on the market and we are not in position to loss any time. Based on the current situation creating a reaction finance force I would like to invite your bank’s representatives to visit our company in two weeks’ time at latest. I would like you to come prepared to outline your suggestions to the meeting in relation to the strategy development of Rudge Pressings’ acquisition and arrangement of the further bank loan. To arrange an appointment with us, please, fill you free to contact to my secretary Mrs. Pope. I am looking forward to seeing you. Your faithfully Mr. Christian Managing Director Elliott Industries more

Resolved Question: I want someone to replace my basement ceiling. Who should I call? How do I pick the right person?

I want to start off by admitting my ignorance when it comes to home improvement. I, by no means, consider myself a DIY-guy, which is why I need professionals to step in. My basement needs some fixing, particularly the ceiling, which uses those cheap ceiling boards. I want a nicer ceiling but I don't even know where to look or who to ask (remember, I admitted my ignorance up front). I live in the Chicago suburbs, by the way. I don't know anyone who can give me a reference, so how can I go about 1) finding someone who can do the job, and 2) finding someone honest. Thanks in advance! more

Resolved Question: Which of the following business ideas has the best chance of success in todays and tomorrows economy?

(3) A husband and wife home improvement team, where we come into your home and work with you to do your own DIY - i.e. show you how to do your own painting, tiling, etc and how to achieve professional results. (4) A Business efficiency consultant - Go into a business, interview the people, figure out what they do, and then report on how the company could do things better and/or do away with unneeded steps in their processes. (5) Handyman service - Come out and fix whatever is broken - a window, hot water heater, whatever... nothing too outrageous - they wont reroof your house but they could fix a leak or repalce a toilet or repair a door, etc. (6) After school Robotics clubs - Kids sign up, parents pay for it, and kids learn how to create and program robots - for school systems not offering such classes. more

Resolved Question: Guest House DIY dilema! Help?!?

I have a guest house that needs lots of improvements in order fr it to be a selling point for my home (yes i know i am insane to try to sell right now.) The problem is- my budget for this is low. WAY low. So here's what I need: 1.) A new front door for the house. preferably something very secure. 2.) a new door for the bathroom. 3.) i need to paint pretty much everywhere- luckily it's already white so i'll stick with that. 4.) the floors are concrete but have were painted a gross green ages ago. this existing paint is faded to nothing in large areas and scratched up like it's been in a catfight in the rest of the house. 5.) it has a gas wall heater that does not appear to be functional. i tried to light the pilot via the intructions but got no results. 6.) the shower walls look horrible. it looks like they are painted with a glossy waterproof paint- which is fine cept i didn't know that existed. 7.) I don't know how to light the pilot lights in the hot water heater or stove :( 8.) the 3 lower cabinets in the kitchen are doorless and need new doors or some other crafty solution. that about sums it up i think. i really need to spend no more than 300 dollars and i know i am going to have to get REAL creative. As many ideas s u can give me would be the biggest help!just so you jerks who intend to criticize me for my low budget know, i have many other repairs to make to the rest of the house. and i wanted creative answers, not critical ones from people who spend their late nights on yahoo answers with nothing better to do than be uncouth and unappealing. more

Resolved Question: BT Broadband Connection issues ?

This started happening during the time I had some DIY/Home Improvement chaps, sorting out the flooring/bathroom tiling and downstairs painting/decorating. Basicaly I found the ADSL Filter in the Phone socket terminal (the white square box to plug in your conventional phone lead) partialy broken, the casing of that little ADSL Filter box must have taken a serious 'bash' as it was now loose and not secure. I noticed that the gold pins for the 'phone end' on the end of the ADSL filter were bent, and badly maligned and the plastic holding them in place was smashed. Somehow it still worked but this is problem I am having right now. If somebody makes a phone call or answers one, the internet connection remains on - but the browsing online to pages/links ends abruptly and I get a error page from Bt Home hub - your internet connection is not active etc etc. No uploading/downloading of data on the broadband line occurs during this point, which is where somebody is speaking to somebody on our phone line. How should I go bouts resolving this mess ? P.S - oh and as soon as somebody hangs up on our phone line, you can start surfing teh web again. They key thing to note is that the internet connection doesn't turn off, it remains on - just being able to follow urls on the web stops working. Weird eh ? more

Resolved Question: Why would a standard duplex outlet have seven wires ( including the ground) connected?

In attempting to replace an outlet in one of the bedrooms we discovered that instead of the standard two hot and two neutral, plus one ground we discovered six wires plus a ground. There appeared to be three hot (two on the lower outlet), three neutral (also two on the lower) and a standard ground wire. As far as we know it is a continuous power outlet and is not connected (and never has been) to a switch. The house was built in 1968 and the previous owner did a number of DIY "improvements". We left the outlet as it was since we had never encountered anything like that before and couldn't find any guidance on the matter. Anyone see this before, got any advice? There are only two electrical outlets in the room, one which we replaced already. To be perfectly honest I have no idea whether or not it branches to another outlet. We opened it pulled the outlet out, observed the insanity, and put it right back in for an electrician to deal with at a later time. I just wanted to know why the heck this would occur in the first place. It is not a switched plug the fin is still intact. more

Resolved Question: Helpful Tips that really work!!

PEANUT BUTTER To get gum out of a carpet, scrape up what you can, using an ice cub to stiffen it if necessary. Then rub a small glob of peanut butter into the fibers, and wipe up the whole mess with a cloth. To get rid of any left-behind PB, just dab it up with a mixture of 1 tsp of dishwashing liquid in 1 cup of lukewarm water. (Thanks to DIY Life for the tip!) PEPPER Everyone knows Clorox's catchy ditty about keeping clothes bright, but all you need is pepper. Add a teaspoon of pepper to the wash before you add in your clothes and it will keep the colors from fading. WHITE VINEGAR Deodorant stains can ruin a perfectly good shirt. Save your whites by spraying white vinegar (no need to mix with water) onto the underarm areas. Then you can wash per usual. SUGAR At your next BBQ don't spend money on anti-pest candles that never work. Simmer 2 cups of milk, a 1/4 pound of sugar and 2 oz. of ground black pepper for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Pour the mixture into bowls and put them where the flies will be attracted to them and then drown. You can also place around the house. No more buzzzzzing at the windows. SODA Next time your drain is clogged and you don't have time to run to the store for some Drain-O just look in your fridge! A 2-liter bottle of soda will do the trick. Just pour it down to clobber the clog. SHORTENING For a natural solution to diaper rash, try coating the area with a thin layer of shortening. It will act as a moisturizer. SALT Grease stains can be a huge pain when it comes to doing laundry. Before you wash, work a generous amount of table salt into the stain and then launder as usual. POTATOES Too much to drink last night and now you have puffy eyes? Apply a thin slice of cold potato to your eyes and leave on for five minutes. Then splash with cool water, put on your makeup (or just some moisturizer -- this means you, too, guys!) and head to work! ORANGES Don't you hate it when you have to start a fire and little bits of newspaper are flying everywhere? Next time, air-dry orange peels, which contain flammable oils that burn longer, and use those instead of the paper. The delicious smell is a bonus. OLIVE OIL Does it seem like nothing is working for your bad skin? Use 4 tablespoons of salt and 3 tablespoons of olive oil to create a paste. Leave it on your face for 2 minutes and rinse with warm water. Then wash your face as normal. Use every day for a week and then cut back to 3 days a week and you should notice an improvement. MUSTARD It may make you smell like a hot dog, but rubbing a thin layer of mustard over your chest and covering with a hot towel can relieve a stuffy head and chest. MILK Oh no! You forgot to put the cap on your pen and now there is ink seeping into your shirt. No worries -- just grab some milk and soak the area. Depending on the type of ink, this process can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 24 hours. Patience is a virtue. MAYONNAISE It's one thing when your child draws on the wall with crayons, it's quite another when it comes to your wood furniture. Rub some mayonnaise on the crayon mark and let it soak for ten minutes. Then take a damp cloth and wipeaway the mayo AND the crayon! LEMONS Dandruff can be an embarrassing health problem, but the special shampoo often smells yucky. Try massaging 2 tablespoons of lemon juice into your scalp and rinsing with warm water. Follow with a leave-in rinse of 1 teaspoon lemonjuice in 1 cup of warm water. Use this daily until your scalp is healed. FLOUR You have an ant problem but are worried about the poisonous ant traps around your pets. Just sprinkle flour wherever you see ants entering the house and along the pantry shelves, since they are most likely after your food. EGGS No time to hit the salon before your big event? Get your hair super shiny and conditioned with eggs! Take two beaten egg yolks and massage into hair. Start at the scalp and work in small sections. Then gather all of the hair in a shower cap, wrap in a warm towel and wait 30 minutes (you could cook the kids' dinner). Rinse with cool water and shampoo as usual. CORN STARCH Your child just learned how to tie their shoes and the knots are impossible to undo. Stay calm and sprinkle a little cornstarch on the laces to help you work out the knot. CLUB SODA There's no more worrying about drinking red wine on white carpet. Soak up as much wine as possible and then pour club soda over the area, making sure to blot and not rub. Repeat the process until the wine is no longer visible. You can also do the same for urine stains. CASTOR OIL While most of us associate castor oil with constipation or childbirth, did you know it can also help get rid of pesky moles in your yard? Just mix a 1/2 cup of castor oil with two gallons of water and pour the mixture down the mole(s) hole(s). Don't worry, the solution is animal friendly and they will likely relocate. BUTTER A jewelry box can help you organize, but sometimes those thin-chained necklaces just want to get tangled and you can't stop them! Rub some butter into the knot and lay on a flat surface. Then take a sewing needle to untangle. When finished just run under hot water to rinse off the butter. BREAD Next time you drop a wine glass or break a plate, grab a slice of bread to help you clean up. After you pick up the larger pieces, press the bread over the area and it will pick up all the itty bitty pieces you can't see. Bread can also help clean fingerprints off walls and wallpaper. Just rub and voila! BANANAS Before you throw your banana peel in the compost pile, remove any stringy pulp and use the peel as a buffer. This works with silverware as well as leather shoes and leather furniture. Just rub the peel over the object and buffwith a soft cloth. Be sure to test a small section of your furniture first! APPLES Sick of waiting for your green tomatoes to ripen on the windowsill? Stick up to five tomatoes in a brown paper bag with a ripe apple and seal for a few days. This will speed up the ripening process. May sound wierd but it does really work! more

Resolved Question: exactly what DIY work am I allowed to do in and outdoors on my house in Crete without having to pay IKA?

when we bought our house, the outside terraces had been tiled and a block garden path laid. We're now having some building work done and have found that no IKA was paid on this. I want to do some jobs like putting up internal garden fences and gates and build some decking and other work that requires no permit, but need to know exactly what is allowable without having to pay IKA. Greece is the only country in Europe where this is a problem: nowhere else makes you pay IKA or national insurance on home improvements, unless it's a major project requiring some sort of planning permission. Resolved Question: I need a Do-It-Yourself Site?

I like being creative. I like working with my hands. I subscribe to Popular Science, and particularly like the Do-It-Yourself section. Unfortunately the things featured are often expensive or impractical. I've searched for a good DIY site, but haven't found one thats not lacking a certain something. They all seem generic or home-improvement oriented. I just want something fun to do while I'm at home for the summer, trying to stay out of trouble. Anyone know of a site with interesting little projects, electronics, or other home-built things that might keep me entertained? P.S. I've already found DIY.com and DIYNetwork.com more

Resolved Question: Need help in writing something nice in a book that I am giving a friend for a present?

I am catching up with an old friend I havn't seen in a long time because she moved overseas when she got married. I bought her a Bunnings Home Improvememt Handy Hints book. Bunnings is a large hardware chain store here in Australia. It's a bit like Sears. She has always enjoyed doing DIY projects around the house and when she lived here in Australia she was always off to Bunnings to buy something to do with DIY projects. They have just bought a hunred year old house in the UK and have lots of renovation work to get stuck into. That is why I thought the Home Improvement book would be perfect for her. Because it's from her favorite hardware store and it should come in useful when they start work on there house. My problem is, I am useless at writing something nice to put in the book. I want it to be special for her but not sound silly. Any ideas would be greatfully expected. Thank you more

Resolved Question: What's best kind of flashing?

I have an add on room that needs a new roof. Am strongly considering DIY mainly due to the cost. I think I've got most of it figured out {from home improvement book}. Any tip from others who have done this type of project? There are several types of flashing available. The home depot guy was kinda vague when I asked him, so I'll ask you all, what kind of flashing is best? more
