Open Question: Out of Memory Error in Windows XP?

I am running a copy of Windows XP. It worked quite fine for an year or so. But, for the last couple of days, the OS gives an out of memory error and everything my cursor points to on the screen goes blank. Even the task manager window appears but with not text in it. Most of this happened while surfing the internet since I used to open quite a lot of tabs simultaneously in Mozilla Firefox 5. But, now even when I am running a program it unexpectedly gives out of memory error. My third party RAM monitor shows around 350 MB of RAM still free even then I get this error. I have 1 GB of RAM which I suppose is enough for atleast Windows XP. Kindly tell me any software of help in this case. I want to avoid formatting my Windows and then again installing it. If this is the ultimate solution then kindly tell any free software which can backup my porgrams and drivers and then restore the system again after installing a fresh copy of Windows XP. more

I am setting up computers for an office network currently consisting of 7 computers, they are all 100% identical aside from 2 having 1GB of RAM as opposed to 512MB. What piece of software can create a complete image of my computer allowing me to boot into a single or multiple DVDs to restore the computer (meaning without having to boot into Windows). I want Windows itself to be on said DVDs containing all settings and all files. Is this possible? And if not is it possible to do within Windows? As I said they are all the same model. I recently upgraded my laptop from Vista Home Premium (64-bit) to Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit). Before doing so, I made a complete system backup of my hard drive onto an external hard drive. During the installation of Win 7, I had to delete over 50 GB of some of my most important files. If I try to restore all my files from the external hard drive, will it restore the whole Vista operating system, or just my hard drive? I used the backup software that came with the external hard drive. It's called Backup Now EZ and the external is a Toshiba 500GB. more

I have recently had windows 7 crash on a reall vista computer. So i replaced the origional operating system through the recovery discs *vista*. I had windows live mail contacts saved on a backup drive externally and everytime i try to import them into windows live mail from the vista operating system it requires me to enter a user name and password for the security authentication. When I turned on my computer (HP s7400n) this morning a screen came up that said: Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this. I have tried every single one of those and each and every one of them leads to a blue screen that says: A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again follow these steps: Disable or uninstall any anti-virus, disk defragmentation or backup utilities. Check your hard drive configuration, and check for any updated drivers. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer. Technical information: *** STOP: 0x00000024 and a bunch of other numbers and letters... There's no way for me to get past this screen. What should I do? Is a full system recovery my only option? I have a lot of photos and home videos on the computer that I'm hoping aren't lost forever. I am planning to get 2 of the Seagate Expansion 500GB External Desktop Hard Drive with USB 2.0 connector from walmart and I use Dell with intel Pentium D PC with Windows XP. Does it come with the software I need, or do I need to download it? If I do need to download software for this, what is the best software for this? When my computer does get a terrible virus, how do I safely use the external hard drive to reload my computer and make it work again? I would like to have such a protocol printed out in case I don't have internet access. Also, is an external hard drive not plugged in and basically just stored safer than one that is kept plugged in and used more often? The 500 gb external hard drives are listed as $67 each from walmart. I am planning to get 2, and back up my system now onto both. I am open to suggestions for other external hard drives, but I do want to get 2. One I will simply store in a box away from my computer and only update yearly, for use as an emergency backup for my computer and the other external hard drive. The other I will update at least monthly, and both external hard drives will be used to store extra pictures and music that would otherwise slow down my regular computer. So my plan is once I get the 2 fairly cheap external hard drives, put my current system onto both, store one away from my computer to be seldom used, delete most of the music and photos that are basically just storage from my computer itself to make plenty of room to make the computer fast, store new photos and music on both my computer and monthly updated hard drive until I update the stored hard drive yearly, at which point I can delete them from my computer if they have grown quite cumbersome. The reason for this is that we are expecting twins, and I plan to take a LOT of digital pictures that I want to be safe. I also have a lot of CD's that is taking me tens of hours to place onto my computer. About once a year I have had to call in professionals to deal with computer issues, mostly from viruses, and last time they had to wipe my machine and reinstall software. I lost everything on my hard drive in the process. I do use virus protection. I have heard of external hard drives, particularly the cheaper ones, but all hard drives, failing and losing data, so I don't feel comfortable just having one backup or storing music files and photo files on one external hard drive. I don't want to call professionals in and pay them $300 or more to fix my computer again. more

Resolved Question: How do you recover from the "Malware Defense" virus?

I was browsing for a game recently and my computer was bombarded by a computer protection scam. The windows and icons used by the creators of the scam were fairly convincing but the biased words they wrote in the interface gave it away. Several windows popped up and I..well I freaked. :/ I tried looking for, what my limited knowledge of viruses considers, suspicious processes and services in the task manager to stop them. This did not work. I found the suspicious processes, but the virus had disabled the "go to service" function of my task manager and many if not most service names are just jumbled characters to me. So that fell through. I then moved to old reliable - Malwarebytes. Turns out this virus is a real sweetheart and was designed to infect and integrate itself with REAL Windows files and processes. I didn't recognize these obscure Windows processes and the were taking up unusual amounts of my computer's resources so I went to their folder locations and deleted them..so naturally my system isn't at 100% now. :/ Later I found a site which had a tutorial for how to take care of this virus without manually deleting files. So I followed it and worked around the virus to use Malwarebytes. It worked, I scanned my comp., but now I need help finding out how to repair the damage I did. :/ I know I made a stupid move...but what's worse is that I haven't taken a backup - ever. My Lenovo R61i was acquired through a school program and I haven't had the money to buy an external hard drive or even the disks for back ups. I would prefer not to have to completely re-image my computer as the IT department tends to wipe almost everything from the HD (though I am thankful for the services offered ;) ). I know it's important, but I can't remember all the dlls and other files I deleted. I recall a "twunk_32"....but that's about it. :/ If anyone has any knowledge of the Windows files that are affected by this virus I'd would be appreciative of any sharing of this knowledge. So I reloaded the system software on my Dell Vostro 200, only to discover that you're supposed to backup all of your drivers beforehand. After having installed the obvious drivers, it seems that the drivers for the ethernet controller and SM bus controller are still absent. Dell Support offers me 59 drivers for my model, but doesn't specify which ones I lack and which ones I have already. Dell Tech Support will run me fifty dollars. Resolved Question: Asus Laptop crashes on startup, hardware or software problem?

So here's the deal, My Asus X83Vm laptop has done this for the second time except for this time is it more severe. It crashes in the screen with the progress bar during startup in Vista. Both times this happened the computer slowed down tremendously after coming back from sleep mode and stopped booting up after a forced shutdown. The first time this happened I was able to start in safe mode and backup my files, this time it simply won't start. Either the progress bar goes forever or it simply restarts on its own. Also every time I start in safe mode it gives me the blue screen. I am able to recover the system to its factory condition but I am worried that it may be a hardware issue. There have been no mods made to the computer. So what do you think? Is it software or hardware related? more

I have Windows Vista Home Premium. My Computer was made by Cyberpower Inc. P5N-E SLI Graphics Integrated Motherboard ; NVIDIA nForce 650i SLI/ 430i Series. I was playing World of Warcraft when suddenly everything became, sort of pixel-y. Nothing would respond, and I was forced to just unplug it. When I turned it back on, I got the blue screen of death. Another try and I got it in safe mode, and managed to System Restore and restored it. Now I can turn it on SOMETIMES without it getting Pixel-y and when i get it normally, it hits a black screen with the mouse. I cant hit Ctrl+Alt+Delete OR Ctrl+Shift+Esc. And when I use it, it goes to the Select your language screen, then product key screen, and finally a screen that says select the drive to install on. Hello, I have installed, today (28 December 2009) a trial version of instant lock- folder locker, which I downloaded some 2 months back. So, to check the above programme, whether it works or not, I opened the locker and locked one of my files in it. Whenever I connect some memory device through USB there is a exe file is created of the name "New Folder". Also in each folder of memory device a exe file is created naming same as that folder. I am backing up my files to CD-Rs at the moment and using the Bullguard software to do so. Three out of the five folders it is backing up are small enough to fit onto a single-layer CD-R disc. However, the other two folders, my movies and my music, are too big for one of these discs so I've had to get a dual layer DVD-R disc to put them on. After trying the music folder on one of these, Bullguard said it had finished but when I went onto my computer and looked, it said that none of it had copied. I deduced that this was because it was a DVD disc and not a CD disc like the others. So my question to you is, is there a way around this by making it use a DVD-R? Or, is there a way for me to use TWO single-layer CD-R;s for each folder? Resolved Question: why can't I speed up my computer?

i've been having this problem for a few months now. my computer is ridiculously slow and there isn't anything that i've been able to do to fix it. my computer is an inspiron E1405 windows vista 32 bit home premium. I have no viruses (checked using spyware doctor with anti virus) my computer is completely up to date with windows updates I have procexp but it just shows me that necessary programs are using up my cpu usage i've deleted browsing history/cookies/temp internet files etc. i've deleted temp files in the windows folder i've restored my computer to factory defaults 3 times and it never runs at an adequate speed (reinstalled vista and all it's components, the only thing that remained the same was my D drive (backup files) but there was almost nothing in that drive)) i've run registry mechanic and advanced system optimizer and fixed all issues (out of date software, registry errors, defrag, and whatever else ASO does for my computer) I only have the necessary programs on startup when I fix all the problems on my computer (defrag and such) restart my computer, and magically I have a whole new set of problems. my computer always needs a defrag. if by some miracle my computer is running quickly when I start it up and I go to youtube (just an example) my computer slows way down by the 3rd or so video. (regular websites same sort of thing) i've run dskchk (I think that's how you spell it.) could this be a hardware issue. my ram usage isn't ever that high, am I just missing some big thing?my computer already has a dual core, and it only has 1 gig of ram before virtual memroy, but at most with 32 bit home premium I can only add one more gig. but my ram usage is only around 40%. my cpu usage is 70-100 more

Resolved Question: How should I partition my drives on Windows 7?

I have Windows 7 Home Premium (64 bit) and three internal hard drives, how should I set up my partions/ drives? My goal is to maximize performance. I have the following, with the SATA II being my most recent drive at 1 year old, and the other ranging from 3-5 years old. Seagate 1TB SATA II Western Digital 200 GB SATA Maxtor 250GB ATA Windows Peformance Index gave my 1TB drive a 6.1 for performance. I also have an external 250GB ATA (I think its a Western Digital) hard drive for storing backup files and transferring files between computers. Here is what my computer will be used for: 1. Computer Games (Empire Total War, World In Conflict, Battlefield 2, Oblivion, etc.). Need reasonable space for current and future games as they are getting larger all the time. 2. I have a Hauppauge TV card and occasionally make recordings. (Should the TV program be put on its own partition?) (What about recordings?) 3. Music/ Video Files (iTunes downloads/ music cd's) and all the video files I record with my TV card. Windows has the my documents folder for pictures, world documents, videos and music, but should I leave those empty and just store it on a seperate drive? Would iTunes see a performance difference if its installed on drive C:, but all the music is on drive D:? I generally have been using the smaller 2 drives for storage of video files and my tv card program. 4. I have photo shop installed, but don't use it that often. I also have a program for editing the video files I record. 5. Here is how my system is set up at the moment TB Drive C: OS/ pictures/ music/ non gaming programs/ data files D: Games and some video files 250GB Drive E: filled wiht video files all on one partition 200GB drive F: The software for my tv card, tv recordings and other video files. Most sites I have looked at said to put games and apps all on the OS drive, and then put Music/ data files/ Video on a different drive. Thats different from how I have it set up right now. If I put all my music on Drive D: versus drive C:, should I also install iTunes on Drive D:? or leave iTunes on Drive C:?I know I need to reformat as one of the responders said. I already plan on doing that. My question, was what is the best way to organize the drives I have, and what partitions if any I should make when I reformat. I work as the only on staff IT worker in a business that holds about 15 employees. I consider myself a hybrid, in the sense that I fill both a Database Administrator and System Analyst position at once, but feel I am strongly underpaid. Since I'm the only one with technical knowledge in the business, there is no one knowledgeable enough to really evaluate what I do and how much I should really be getting paid. Languages I use: SQL, VB, C/C++, Java Current Salary: $44,000 (No medical, dental, or vision coverage. No tuition reimbursement. 10 Vacation days/year starting after 1 year of working) Is this fair? I currently have a 250 GB hard drive. I'm going to be purchasing another one of the same size to set up a RAID 0. I have other hard drives in the system to backup to. I want to image the drive the way it is now, so that after I set up the RAID, I can copy the image to the new setup without having to reinstall Windows. more

Voting Question: Windows 7 Upgrade Support! Please Help?

Ok about 3 months ago, I purchased a PC from HP running vista home premium only because i needed a new computer and they had the upgrade program. So today, the ninth of december, I got it in the mail, read the directions, made backup discs, downloaded upgrade advisor from microsoft, and updated all components of the system. I then put in the first disc from HP where they format you computer for upgrade, but when i put in the W7 upgrade disc, it would not open and i got an error message reading "The file 'autorun.dll' could not be loaded or is corrupt. Error code is [0x3E7]". I looked this up on google to troubleshoot but the only responses i found were for the W7 ISO download, but i have A DVD copy of the software. I would really appreciate any help on the matter. Thanks more

Voting Question: backup software - advice?

I want a backup software that backups files on the fly. In another words, when I save a file, it mirrors a copy onto another drive immediately. I don't want it to back up files once a day, once and hour, etc, I want it to back them up only when I save them. And/or gives me the option to do that. What I have to do now is save the file, then re-save it to another drive. Time consuming and prone to errors. Or run backup software. I know I can do that with a raid system, but I don't want to go that route. Freeware would be best. Thanks . more

Resolved Question: GTAIV XP SP2 Problem?

OK. I've DualCore with 2 GB RAM, 160 Hard disk, Windows XP Service Pack 2 with no Graphic Card. I'm able to play all the GTA versions like GTA III, GTA Vice City and GTA San Andreas without any Graphic Card. I used some patch though. GTAIV isnt working on XP SP2. I know that I need XP SP 3 or higher but others with the same XP SP2 are able to play the game. They did this trick - Step 1: Run Regedit by Clicking on Start -> Run , type in regedit and press enter Step 2: Make a backup of your registry (just in case) Step 3: Browse to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ CurrentControlSet\ Control\ Windows" Step 4: Modify the value of "CSDVersion" from "0x00000200" (SP2) to the Windows XP SP3 value of "0x00000300" Step 5: Close registry editor Step 6: Reboot But this isnt helping me..
