Ok first of all im not one of these people who says " oh wales is better than england " or "england is better than scotland" because thats childish and no country is better than another because every nation's people should be proud to be and thats certainly the case in shropshire where english patriotism is mad like no other place(i think anyway). Hey I visit America quite often and I always find Americans who reel off their apparent heritage like some sort of weird list. 'I'm Irish, French, Native American, Jewish' etc My mother is Irish, born and raised in Belfast and I know she finds it upsetting when most of these 'Irish Americans' can't draw the flag, can't name the National Anthem or prime minister and most don't even know the difference between Republic and Northern! Also the sad truth is many are probably making it up. There were many more German immigrants yet because it is a less popular one to claim less people do. This is something that really irritates me, how people claim to be something yet they have almost always never even visited the country. It seems hypocritical of them to be so partiotic and proud of America yet they're always talking about their Danish ancestry or whatever. One I remember even claimed he could drink more because his great-grandad was Irish - wtf!! Americans, what is with this??I'm not disputing they're not of European descent. When the Star Spangled Banner in sung in Puerto Rico, it is sung in English, right? Also what do Puerto Ricans think about Mexican-Americans putting out a version of the Star spangled banner is Spanish? I am all for equality, and I think spanish does have a place in the U.S. (especially in Puerto Rico). But I don't know if I like the idea of our National anthem being done in any different language. All music should be preserved to it's original language. You would never hear someone singing a Shakira song in all English lyrics. So I am a student guitar teacher at my high school. There is a German girl from Stuttgart in the class. Her English is okay but she doesn't understand everything all the time. I have been taking German for four year so I have studied about Germany for a while. The head teacher was commenting on how the German national anthem was "Ode to Joy". I said no, the anthem is the 3rd stanza of the Deutschlandlied" Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit. (I had already proved him wrong on German musical notation- he said no country has the note H). I thought that Ode to Joy was the European Union national anthem. To my surprise the German girl actually agreed with him and she said she hasn't heard Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit before. Now I think it might have been a language thing and she didn't understand; the teacher was being really pushy also. So everywhere I read on the internet says that the 3rd stanza of the Deutschlandlied is the national anthem. Who is right? more
